I've been downloading from and been a member of Bleeping Computer for about two years. I finally wanted to ask a question so I thought that I'd become active.
I'm retired now. I was a mathematician, with some graduate experience in statistics. My company stayed with DOS while I was there and I programmed (not in the developer sense) in Fortran, Pascal, Turbo Pascal, C, and C++. On the side I dabbled in Windows on my home computer(s). Being hit by a drunk driver caused massive physical and mental damage, so I've been on disability for some time. When I turned 65 that turned into regular Social Security and my company's Long Term Disability stopped and the rest is personal.
I've regained some of my mathematical skills, but I'm not close to what I was pre-drunk driver. I live in Virginia where, unless you kill somebody, you only are cited for traffic violations. You're fined and your license is suspended. His license was already suspended so when they extended the suspension another five years out to 77 years it wasn't a really big deal. Something has to be done about drunk drivers. This guy shouldn't be in jail - he should be under the jail.
So I'm on the computer a lot. Hopes for a comeback were dashed when Fibromyalgia worsened to the point where it controlled my life. If you don't know what that is check WebMD. As it worsens, and it started when I was in my twenties. Nobody knows what it actually is although it has been proven by statisticians to have a high degree of correlation to 61 other diseases. The most common effect is an inability to sleep. I haven't gone into deep sleep for ten years, according to sleep studies. A normal person goes into deep sleep 40-60 percent of the time that he/she is in bed.
So the computer is my friend. I have communicated with people in every continent except Antarctica and have long-standing friendships with people in Asia, Africa, Europe, Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, and my home country, the U.S.A.
