OK, fellow compu-heads –

I’ve got a good one for you.

Since 2005 I’ve had this/my HP zd8115us (BIG laptop).  XP Home SP 3.   2.8Ghz Intel P4, 2 GIG RAM.  Further specs, below.

It’s  “slowww” at everything.  Boot-up  >>  16 minutes.  Delayed reaction when clicking on a link or sometimes typing.  MS Outlook ’07 boot-up = 4 minutes.  When I close a program, it often hesitates getting “Not Responding” in top-left bar, and HDD led goes solid for extended time.  Or, I click “shut-down” and all icons on desktop change to appear broken for 20 seconds.

Nothing out of the ordinary is loaded on it, just standard stuff.

Norton, Office ’07 (Small Business), IE8, etc., etc.  No odd ball programs.  I’ve done disk-cleanup, defrag, no disk errors, up to date with all drivers and S/W versions, Win Updates. Verified there are no Trojans, Virus, etc.

Where do I start with this, please?  Sure hope someone can help.

You're a Moderator here?  Not complaining at all, but how'd I get the attention of a Moderator?  Did you see all those posts?  Hundreds of 'em.

Anywho, allright.  Did as you suggested, see below.  Pardon, what is "Speccy", and, ... take a snapshot of what?

All BC Staff members...top to bottom...are here to help.  Some members are here to help.  It matters not who attempts to assist you in this forum, as long as the motive is that of helping and the suggestions do not harm.

I would uninstall:

  Driver Booster

  Stopzilla

  WinUtilities

BC does not support the use of "registry cleaners/optimizers".

Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254

Registry cleaner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner

Registry Cleaner, Animal - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/526247/tune-up-utilities-2014-problem/?p=3303494

I would then run the chkdsk /r command.  Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.  Type Y in new screen, hit Enter.  Reboot.  The command will execute before booting into Windows.

I would follow that with the sfc /scannow command, LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) - http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html .

Then...I'd see how the system performs.

Louis - Thanks for your time & effort/s here.  Question, please:  You mention, uninstalling Stopzilla A-V program.  May I ask, why?  Short story here, ... I've used Norton since 2002, always relied on it, ... until some 10 days ago when I did install Stopzilla AVM (Anti-Virus/Malware) program which, after running, found 52 infections including boot worms, trojans, along with the usual cookies.  Unless I'm missing something here, ... wouldn't you think that Norton should've caught those, or maybe just some?  That gave me pause about the strength of Norton.

Further, ... what're all those crashes and errors in Office Outlook, and Publisher?  I can't remember the last time I opened/used Publisher.  I do use MS Outlook, but I'm not clear of it "crashing", though it does hesitate ("Not Responding")/takes a few seconds to actually "close" when I X/close it off.  In any case, I'm following your advice.  Oh, what is that "Speccy" you spoke of yesterday/Monday?  And, ...take a screen shot of what?

If you read my post...I told you what I would do...not what you should do.  You are the only person who can determine that.

When I say that I would uninstall a given program...unless it happens to be an AV program or some other file that exhibits problems...in effect, I am saying "I see no reason for that program to be installed."

If you do any Googling on the efficacy/usefulness of the programs I mentioned...I believe that you will see that each is highly questionable when it comes to system value.

As for Norton...there was a time that I used Norton Utilities and Norton AV and Norton Internet Security.  I previously tended to try a lot of different programs, mostly on my Windows 9x systems.  That was some time ago and we learn to grow through the mistakes we have made in earlier years...at least, I try to do such.  While Symantec products may have served some purpose in prior years...today I see them as unnecessarily using system resources that comparable programs of that type...do not use.  Today, I see no reason for anyone to use Norton AV or NIS for any reason other than the fact that the user/purchaser sees some value in these programs that I cannot/do not see or experience.

Your question about Norton brings to light a very false assumption by many users...the idea that an AV program is able to/likely to prevent a system from being infected.

There is NO AV program...that can possibly protect a system from all the varying types of malware.  That should be self-evident from the fact that many users have installed, reliable AV programs...and their systems get infected.  Why?  Simply because the biggest hole in the "security structure" of a computer system...is the user, not the software installed by the user.  The software installed is just one possible barrier...in a system of barriers.  The first barrier has to be critical updates...another barrier is the use of a router/modem and protected wifi setup...another barrier (the key barrier) is the user and her/his lack of safe-computing practices/habits.  Even with these barriers properly in place...in today's environment any system can STILL become infected.

You have download sites where malware is constantly being directly or indirectly foisted onto your system.  You have illegal downloads of Windows and software...which, IMO, is the perfect vehicle for any aspiring misanthrope desiring to create chaos on the systems of strangers, via malware.  You have false advertising on just about every website reflecting a valued download...all it takes is to not pay attention and press the wrong button...and you have something you did not expect or want.

In any case...the point I'm trying to make is that your reliance/belief that an AV program should protect your system from malware...is distorted.  An AV program does protect, but it cannot do so to the extent that you and others seem to think it's capable of.  In spite of the ridiculous claims made by the developer.  An AV can only protect reliably against KNOWN malware, just as critical updates address only KNOWN vulnerabilities.  That doesn't help with the UNKNOWN, those that will be countered tomorrow or the next day...but are doing their chosen work today.

My experience with MS Office is that any problems with the suite can be resolved via 3 basic methods:

  a.  Uninstall/reinstakk Office.  Many errors given by a program are due to damaged files...uninstalling/reinstalling removes/replaces such.

  b.  Update/install any/all critical updates for Office and install all SPs which have been issued for your version.

  c.  Consult one of the many forums which deal routinely with nothing but Office and Office scenarios.  There are some good ones, IMO...all available via Google.

IMO...a big contributor to a slow system...is asking it to do things it doesn't have the resources for.  A system with 512MB of RAM...should not be asked to run RAM-intensive programs.  A system that has limited RAM and also reflects 3d-party programs such as I suggested removing...is an accident waiting to happen, IMO.  There's a reason that the old standard advice to those who wanted to make their systems more responsive...is still the same:  "Add more RAM".  At today's prices, it's the best suggestion anyone can make that will make a meaningful difference.

- About using Speccy:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

- Memory usage is relatively high (62%) even with 2 GB. Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes.

- Use Piriform's Ccleaner (Tools, startup) to disable (not remove !!!) programs that run upon start up. (including Task Scheduler).

- The fact that everything is slow could signal that your harddisk could be dying. But Speccy can provide more details.

Louis - It took me 45 minutes thinking on what your  "IMO"  could stand for !!

I'm well aware any AV program doesn't/can't catch all infections.  You misread my statement.  Either way, ...I'm still working on your ideas,/commands/suggestions, ... however you'd prefer to call them.

Moving forward, ... another ABC member (Willy22) posted some good data on "Speccy" and what it does.  Thanks MUCH, Willy.  Louis, you mentioned "adding RAM", ... agreed!  Yet, with a laptop that it's User Guide, etc. state that the maximum RAM to install is 2GB, ... is that indeed true?  Because that's what this laptop contains.

Off subject, question:  I've seen several members posts, and like Willy, they for whatever reason don't want to expose their gender.  Seems odd to me.  ... just an observation.

This (coming) early morning I'll run the chdsk /r and file system check and will report back.  Thanks again for your time & efforts here, Louis.  Best,

Re gender observation :), what difference does it make on this forum?  Sound advice or suggestions...have nothing to do with gender, in my world.  And that's the business of the various forums...to assist, to inform, to try to broaden the  knowledge base of all members.

Sorry about the IMO, but a simple check using Google will reveal the answers to many things you might come across when browsing the Web :).

Re your laptop...yes, 2GB of RAM is the max.  The system was put together in 2005, which is almost 10 years and, at that time, the RAM max was considered fine for the program resource requirements of 2005 sottware.  The problem is...this is almost 2015 and you are not necessarily running programs from the 2005 era.  Your "optimizers", your version of MS Office, and so on...all postdate the resources available in a 2005 system.  IMO, that limits what you should expect performance-wise from that system and should take care not to install programs which diminish the resources available for your key programs.

Louis - Referencing yours above, ... "gender" makes no difference in sound advice (unless it's gender specific).  My statement/question didn't contain a slant relative to "sound advice" ... it was ONLY an observation, as I stated.  It was meant as "conversation", maybe a little friendly chit-chat, ...  just as I earlier observed and mentioned the hundreds of posts in this forum separated by mere seconds.

Quite honestly, Louis ...  I had the same reaction to your first reply to me, but I blew it off, yet now on your 3rd reply reading through your posts back to me, I find you somewhat abrasive, and condescending.  You haven't the tiniest bit of humor.  I don't care for your "tone" at all, ... please do not write me any further.
