Hello there!

My laptop (Compaq Presario CQ56 / Windows 7) is getting slower and slower probably because I keep updating the software through hippo and secunia. Does anybody know a way to speed up the functions without puting the laptop in danger for viruses? Should I delete some programmes so that they don't get so much space at my hard drive and if so which programmes should I delete?

Thank you for your help!

Cleanup the computer and check for adware and malware...first.

Use CCleaner to cleanup temporary files, logs, ad/ tracking cookies, etc. Use the default settings. No need to use the Registry Cleaning Tool and its

use may cause other problems. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck the offers of toolbars such as Yahoo.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

  • Run the ESET Online Scanner.
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Hello!

Thank you for your answer! I run the Adwcleaner and Junkware Removal Tool weekly to avoid infections and I didn't have any notifications from these programmes for viruses so far. However, I will run the above programmes again along with ESET on line scanner and CCleaner and let you know as soon as possible.

Best wishes!

AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool do not alert you or offer real time protection.

After you have scanned with Eset,  installed CCleaner and allowed it to clean the computer,

open CCleaner and click on Tools, Uninstall. Down at the bottom of that page you will see a

button to click on for copying and pasting the list of installed programs back here.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools, Startups and post that list of programs back here. You can also

check on that same page each of your browsers' add-ons startups. If you see anything that you haven't intentionally

installed choose to Disable it.

Hi, Manolis! There are various software programs, which enable to speed up your computer with a few clicks only, just like CCleaner. If you get a decent one, you don't need to use a few of them. These are some of the best PC cleaners. Some of them are free of charge as well. However if you want to spend a few buck on a program, which will keep your computer on a good shape, there is one called sweeptools PC cleaner. A friend of mine recommended it to me a week ago. It works pretty well and there is an obvious difference regarding my computer performance

While your intent is to possibly assist...what you have posted is bad advice.

BC does not support the use tools such as you have suggested.  Suggesting the use of such for system problems that may be related to malware...is a major step in the wrong direction on several counts.

Hello! Thanks again to everyone for your help! :-)

I scanned the laptop with CCleaner. That went ok!

ESET on line scanner is taking way too long... It has ran for about 4 hours and it has scanned only 30% of the laptop. Does it usually take so long?

Here are the rest of the logs:

Buddy hello! Thank you for your help! :)

Do you mean that I should uninstall Adwcleaner and reinstall it from the above link? I do use Adwcleaner to scan my laptop regularly so I guess I need this program.

I use File hippo, Skype, VLC media player and Secunia. Can I keep these?

The Superantispyware and Malware Bytes Anti Malware I have are both the free versions.

Personally I don't use Java but I don't Know if the laptop uses it to run some programs...Is it necessary?

Last but not least, I am not sure how to remove programs from Startup. Any ideas?

I am sorry for the too many questions! Best wishes and thank you again!

Yeah, just reinstall AdwCleaner when you suspect you have adware. Just be sure to download from developer's site or BC.

I noted you used Secunia and File hippo to update programs. Really, Microsoft updates all Windows programs throughout the

month and the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Other than that the most vulnerable to malware programs that you should keep

updated with the latest security updates are ALL Adobe products, browsers and JAVA. Manually checking for those updates

once a month rather than using system resources constantly is to me the better choice.

The Skype add-on that I suggested to uninstall is only used for clicking on phone numbers in ads. Most likely you never use it.

If you are in doubt as to whether a game or some site you use requires Java, then just disable JAVA in your Add-Ons > Plugins

JAVA....not java script...you need java scripting. If JAVA is needed the game or website will alert you..

Since both SAS and MBAM or free versions no need to have them in startup.

On the page you viewed Startups in CCleaner....to the right...you will see the option to disable or enable. Just click on an individual

entry to the left to highlight and then choose disable. If you find later you want to reenable you can do that.

Disabling the startups I listed may have a significant change in computer's speed....or not. So, I suggest you give it a try and see what

if any effects it has.

You have two VLC programs installed. I listed the oldest.

I noted that you have both the professional and starter versions of Office installed but did not suggest uninstalling the Starter version

because I have seen uninstalling Office can be a real hassle and sometimes cause problems. I thought best just to leave it.

Buddy hi! Thank you for your help once again! :-)

I couldn't find the Adwcleaner from the Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall so I just deleted it from my Downloads folder and downloaded the one from your link. Hope that's ok!

I uninstalled almost all of the programs you recommended plus Secunia. I decided to keep Hippo. You are right that I could find the programs you mentioned and update them manually but sometimes I forget. So I prefer to have a software to remind me provided that it doesn't make the laptop really slow... For me Hippo is much better than Secunia so I decided just to keep the one of the two. Hope that's ok! I had problems uninstalling Yahoo toolbar. It took too much time and it didn't unistall it after all ...Any ideas? As far as Java is concerned, I just uninstalled the programs you mentioned and I left the rest.

I removed all the programs you mentioned from the Start up menu apart from SunJavaUpdateSched that I couldn't find...The truth is I haven't noticed the laptop getting that much faster after I removed/uninstalled all these programs. Especially when I turn the laptop on it needs about 1 min. to load all the programs and for the Mozilla to run I have to wait even more...

My laptop is Compaq Presario CQ56. The processor is Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20 GHz. The local disc C has 151 GB free out of 216 GB and the Recovery D has 2.32 GB free of 16.1 GB. At some point, If I remember correctly, the HP support informed me that I should clean the Recovery drive because it was getting full. The point is that I don't have the money to buy an external hard drive in order to save the content of the D drive there. Could this be the reason for the slowness?

Can I do sth about this problem?

I also downloaded and ran a System File Check from the link you mentioned and I did the repairs you mentioned as well. The System File Check didn't mention any problems.

I am not really knowledgable concerning technology and laptops so I hope this is a bit clear. I am also trying to fit this in between various jobs so I am sorry if it takes a bit of time to reply...:-)

I look forward to hearing from you!
