Help saving a word doc on a Mac

Hi
I recently paid for a new cv to be written by a company, they sent it to me as a word document.
I work of a Mac.
I saved it on my Mac but when I came to open it I lost the formatting, layout and headers.
Can anyone give me simple step by step instructions as to how I save this.
I have saved it fine as a PDF but some sites won't let me submit a PDF copy of my cv and I need to save it in other formats.

If you download LibreOffice, a free word processing / spread sheet / database program you can save it with that and keep the formatting.

 

It's a reliable program I have used it frequently and it is available for MAC.
