Welcome to BC.....

Do you get the 404 error when you enter https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl in your address bar?

You've posted in a Linux forum...are you using a Linux distro or Windows?

You did not answer my questions.

The solution(s) I would suggest for your problem differs as to whether you are using a Linux operating system or a Windows operating system.

Again, what happens when you enter https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl in your address bar? Or just click on  https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl ?

EDIT: we posted at the same time

You either have an active/ accessible internet connection or not. Has nothing to do with Google. Google is a search engine

and also provides other services such as an email client.

Okay....that may clear up the next time you boot your computer. You can also try resetting your home page in Preferences.

If it is a dns issue...that may clear up in 24 hours.

If you use a bookmark for accessing Google after Firefox opens then delete the bookmark and create a new one for Google.

To flush DNS in Linux ( Buntu)
sudo /etc/init.d/dns-clean restart
then

sudo /etc/init.d/networking force-reload
