Dell latitude D520.  Running XP.

The sound used to work but now the Control Panel shows no audio device.  I downloaded and installed the sound driver from the Dell site and it worked (for a few minutes) until I rebooted the computer.  Now it shows no audio device again and it won't allow me to reinstall the driver.

I don't know if this is a Spyware/Malware problem, but I've run Malwarebytes and SuperANTISpyware but they only found cookies to delete.

Please advise.

Hi,

I'm guessing that the latest drivers may not be XP compatible. You might want to do a control panel delete of the new driver and reboot. That should reinstall the default driver which may work better with your OS. The other option is to updata /upgrade your OS to at least W7.

As XP gets older, with no support, the hazards of running it increase.

Hi.

That's the thing - the driver did not stay installed.  And will not install now. There is no driver to control panel delete.

I'm thinking about updating the laptop to Ubutnu.  Do you think the sound will work with a new OS?

Don't know for sure but I would expect the driver to be compatible with a supported OS

Try it :)

Dell offers a driver reset tool that may be of assistance. To download, go to step 2.on the following page...

http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_181903

Make sure your BIOS version is A08. You can check by pressing <F2> While the Dell Splash Screen is displayed immediately on power-up.

Make sure that the Notebook System Software Utility is installed on your system

Make sure your chipset version is Version 7.2.2.1006,A09.

Make sure that the Sigmatel Stac 92XX C-Major Audio, Version 5.10.0.5515,A11 is installed on your system.

These files are all available on the Dell website...

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/latitude-d520/drivers

You will not harm your system in any way if you choose to download and install any or all of the above.

If you need to install any or all recommend BIOS 1st. System Software 2nd. Chipset 3rd. Audio Last.

Hi.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I installed all the drivers in the order you recommended:

BIOS 1st. System Software 2nd. Chipset 3rd. Audio Last. and the sound worked until I restarted the computer.

Now there's no sound and it reads No Audio Device.

Ideas?

Do you have any software installed that resets the computer or software programs back to where it was before it was last booted? That could be causing the problem here.

Lets check that the Windows Audio Service Settings are ok.

Refer to this KB to use Computer Management in XP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308423

Scroll down to How to Use Computer Management on the Local Computer and follow the instructions there.

Once into the Microsoft Management Console, click the arrow by Services and Applications then click on the subcategory Services.

1. In the large pane to the right scroll down to Windows Audio.
Right click Windows Audio and check that Startup type is set to Automatic and that the service is started.
2. Go to the Log On tab and make sure the bullet is in This account and Local Service appears in the window. If not make the necessary changes and click Apply.
3. Go to the Recovery tab, First and Second failure should read Restart the Service, Subsequent failures should read Take No Action. Reset Count after 1 days, Reset service after 1 minutes.
4. The Dependencies tab will vary but normally contains Multimedia Class Scheduler, Remote Procedure Call, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.

Other than intentional tweaking, or corruption from viruses and malware  Windows Services rarely change. But like anything else... it happens. I have seen numerous systems where MSConfig has been used, and that is definitely a No-No. When a system came to the shop one of the first things I checked was the System Configuration Utility and you'd be amazed how many problems were solved in 10 minutes or less because someone Tweaked their system without knowing what they were doing. (They read it on the internet so it was gospel), forgetting that "What works for one, doesn't always work for everyone.

Black Viper has listings and configuration files for windows services. If you are interested I'd suggest the default column for the version of XP you are using.

http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-xp-x86-32-bit-service-pack-3-service-configurations/

Also he has a registry tool for custom services.

http://www.blackviper.com/custom-services-registry-file-creation-tool/windows-xp-custom-services-registry-file-tool/windows-xp-home-service-pack-3-custom-services-registry-file-tool/

I recommend that you scroll to the bottom of the page Click the Reset To Defaults and then click Create File. It will give you a good starting point if you have previously tweaked any of your system services.

Old Rocker - I ran into some trouble with the Windows Audio System Services:

1. In the Windows Audio, Startup is set to Automatic but the Service doesn't stay started.  It reverts back to stopped!

2. In the Log On tab, when I click the This Account bullet, the window is empty.  Local Service is not an option in the browse list.

3. Ok.

4. When I click on the Dependencies tab I get the 'Service Dependencies.  RPC:  The server threw an exception' box.  Also, the Dependencies boxes are empty.

I'll look at the Black Viper configurations now.  Thanks.

OK bear with me...

I would like you to create a new user account with administrative privileges. Let's name it TestAdmin all one word. Don't worry about your information for now. We'll Cover That Later.

Reboot your system and choose the new account(TestAdmin at logon.

It will take a few minutes to establish settings and configure the new user account. Again... don't worry about your information or how things look. This is a new account with proper settings (I hope)

1. Is the audio working?

2. What is the status of Windows Audio System Services? Does everything under Windows Audio System Services look normal? (as specified in the previous post?)

3. Reboot and Repeat Check If Yes.

Post Back Results!

Hi.

I updated the computer to Black Viper's Default configuration.  Didn't help the audio.

I created a new user TestAdmin (with administrative privileges) and signed in.

The Windows Audio System Services is the same as it was when I signed in as me.

The service status does not stay on.

Here's a new twist - I got a downloaded mp3 file (windows media player) to play but not the internet (YouTube).

I rebooted.  The Windows Audio Services says the Windows Audio is Started.

There's no sound on the internet and it won't let me play the mp3 - problem with my sound device.

The Sounds and Audio Devices Properties says No Audio Device.

Open Control Panel  > Add/Remove Programs

Remove the following...

DriverToolkit version 8.3.5.0 (HKLM\...\{D66BF89F-B0A2-48F5-A2E4-242EB645AB76}_is1) (Version: 8.3.5.0 - Megaify Software)

WiseConvert B2 Toolbar (HKLM\...\WiseConvert_B2 Toolbar) (Version: 6.15.0.27 - WiseConvert B2)

If you don't use the AOL toolbar remove that also.

Now let's address this error found above... Error: (09/04/2014 07:58:50 PM) (Source: SideBySide) (User: )
