OS crash and/or mouse/keyboard freeze - always within first few minutes of startup.  I'm just not getting anywhere with working this out and I've been fighting it about eight weeks now.

I bought a Dell Studio XPS 9100 in July 2011. It has always performed perfectly. Paid version of Malwarebytes and paid version of Avast Internet Security; always fully updated and always returning full system scans as clean, no issues.  Windows 7 is kept fully updated.

I use Firefox except when f...ed into having to use IE Explorer when required (like banks, Verizon Wireless, et al).

Over the last eight weeks or so I have been having crash issues in the first minutes after startup. Every crash has happened in the first 5 - 10 minutes of startup. If it get past that, I'm good to go all day and half the night.

I'm having two 'types' of crashes. Sometimes I can startup, start working, and then the monitors (two) 'scramble' and the mouse / keyboard are completely freeze up. I can do nothing but a hard shutdown. Grrr.

The other times (about half), the mouse / keyboard will simply freeze - either before getting started; i.e., unable to even enter my user password; or very very shortly after getting logged in; barely able to open a few programs (Firefox, Word, Excel, Outlook . . .)

I have found that if I put the computer to sleep at the end of the day, there will be no mouse / keyboard freeze or crash - but how long do I want to only put the computer to sleep? Surely not for days or weeks on end - though that is what I am mostly doing for now. I should be able to do shutdowns and need to sort out this problem. I am very afraid that I'll have a fatal crash / freeze and the proud owner of a very expensive brick.

I ran the Windows troubleshooter and it came out clean. I ran CHKDSK and it come out clean. I ran the Dell hardware diagnostic and it came out clean.

Through the Windows Event Viewer I did identify that the host file was missing and used the Microsoft Fixit utility to restore the file and it has been restored for a couple of weeks now; no problem. When it went away or why, I don't know. I suppose that I'd have to scroll waaay back through the Event Viewer to find out.? In any event, restoring that file did nothing to help with the problem.

There may be more information in the Event Viewer that would be helpful? But I am not qualified to know.

I am using a Logitech Wireless Desktop MX710 mouse / keyboard combo. In fact, I have a pair of them that run through Logitech's USB device unifier. I don't have both keyboards in use at the same time hardly ever, but did check that when one freezes / becomes nonfunctional - they are both out.

I am NOT a computer geek (I'm a researcher / writer) and some things (lots of things) I'm not smart enough or experienced enough to have any business messing with without having my hand held by someone that actually knows what they are doing.

Though I'm a researcher, I just don't know enough about the nuts and bolts of computers to focus my research to get at a solution for this problem. I've run a bunch of diagnostic programs but they all come up completely clean and I'm just hitting dead ends on what to do.

Dell Studio XPS 9100

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit, English

Processors: Intel Core i7-960 processor (8MB L2 Cache, 3.20GHz

Memory: 18GB Tri Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 6DIMMs

Video card: AMD Radeon HD6870

Exceprted from system information report:

BIOS Version / Date: Dell A04, 2010-10-21

SMBIOS Version: 2.6

Installed Physical Memory: 18GB

Available Physical Memory: 14.5GB

Total Virtual Memory: 36GB

Available Virtual Memory: 32.5 GB

Page File Space: 18GB

The Dell driver utility shows that there is an update available for the BIOS (with the interesting "Last Updated" date of 3 July 2014) but the only noted "Fixes/Enhancements" is "Support Intel new CPUs" so I don't see updating the BIOS as an obvious thing to do.

I tend to be afraid to run driver updates because of my belief that doing so often creates problems where there were none.

My AMD Radeon HD6870 is version 7.12.0.7706 and can be updated to Version 8.85, A02 - but I'm afraid to do anything that isn't likely to go directly to the immediate problem, which I consider to be extremely serious. Having to do hard shutdowns is physically painful for me.

The Dell driver utility shows three other updates available:

Creative Labs PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Application

Creative Labs PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Utility

NEC USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver

I'd be happy to update any or all of these things but am not qualified to know if any of them are likely to help.? I am experienced enough to know that fixing things that aren't broken is often a very bad idea.

After I ran all of those tests I went back to normal end-of-day shutdown and got two days of normal startups. The next day I had complete mouse / keyboard freeze and was unable to enter the password and to shut it down hard. The last couple of days I've just closed my programs and put the computer to sleep. It gives me no trouble waking up and going back to work but how long can I get away with this? I've got to stay on this and figure it out.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Please - ELI5 (Explain Like I'm Five). All suggestions are welcome.

PS - Since I wrote this account a couple of weeks ago I'm getting no feedback after shopping it around to a few people.  Tonight I went ahead with the AMD video driver update.  I used the AMD driverdownloader - detetector and let let it decide what was 'best'.  The restart was clean and video seems fine;  monitors are good; ran Battlefield 2 for a while - nothing seems any different, but nothing seems to have exploded either.   Waaay too soon to know if this will help with the startup crashes.  My guesss is that it won't but it looks like its worth the try.  The one restart so far doesn't tell me anything.  I am going to shutdown tonight and see what happens in the morning.  Thing is, it may startup okay for a couple of days and then go right back to crashing on startup. We'll see.

On the plus side, the AMD driver update has properly installed the Catalyst Control Center, which has been nonfunctional for a long time.  A year or so ago I had some major crash problems when closing Battlefield 2 and a driver update corrected that problem 100%, but blew up the Catalyst Control Center.  Since I never use it, leaving it alone seemed best since the update did completely fix the crash problem when closing out of the game.

On the minus side, I might should have done the custom installation because it installed "AMD Gaming Evolved" which I'll have to Google up on but it sounds and looks a bit like spyware at best.?  Maybe it is totally harmless, but it just has a sketchy feel as something that shouldn't have been a part of the default driver update.?

Also, I have tried to run sfc / scannow.  I honestly haven't a clue if that will tell me anything about the startup crashes or help in any way, but I absolutely cannot get it to run.  I've Googled this a bit, and at the moment fixing that issue is beyond my skills.  The few things that I've seen to try and get sfc / scannow to work are not things that I am comfortable doing without guidance from people more knowledgeable than I am.

I am afraid that one too many startup crashes will cause some serious damage, but merely putting the computer to sleep every single day - I don't know how smart that would be, and the crash issue(s) will still be in there lurking, waiting patiently to get me.

I had the exact same problem for the last few days and It was a faulty update of Avast, maybe this will help you, I had to uninstall avast with the Avast Software Uninstall Tool, and use ccleaner to clean up if there was any left overs.. but I am going to let the professionals sort yours out since it maybe a different issue.

Thanks so much for taking a look at my issue.  Because Microsoft had to do a restart for an update (and it restarted fine), that was when I pulled the trigger on the video driver update (and got a good restart).  I did a shutdown last night instead of putting the computer to sleep (which eliminates the need and risk for a startup the next day).  I've got a good startup today (about 40 minutes up so far and if it were going to crash, it would have by now).  But I don't think I've gotten past three successful startups in a row in the last eight weeks.  I'll put it to sleep tonight unless you advise otherwise because I'm afraid of losing the computer entirely if can't solve the problem.  Every crash has me praying that it be 'the' fatal one.

Also, there are a bunch of VDS Basic Provider errors in the log now (which I know nothing about), and that is newish I think.?  They definitely were not being listed in the Event Viewer when this situation first started happening.  I've been working on this long enough now that it's hard to keep everything straight.   Event Viewer listings are miles long and most of it doesn't mean anything to me.  I've done everything that I know to do and gone as far as I can without getting in over my head and making things worse.

(Regarding the other post mentioning Avast:  It is 'on' all the time every which way I expect.  I allowed it to do the 'site check' thing too.  I don't know if the feature is really in any way helpful or just a why to track my every click.)

Even with 'best effort', I (or any non-expert) can only guess at what is 'best' or 'safe' - or what is intrusive, bad news, or downright dangerous.

To be honest...I see no reason for any of the errors manifested.  I also note that I'm somewhat confused by how Speccy reflects your hard drives.  Are you running a RAID or have such elected in the BIOS?

You're the pro - I'll freely admit that when I look at Speccy and the hard drive information, I have no idea what m most of it means.

I am not running a RAID.  I wouldn't even know how to set it up.  I have two external Maxtor drives that I use for backing up files.  My bank is across the street, so the most current backup of files is in a safe deposit box.  The other one is stashed in this building in an undisclosed loctation.  I update the backup and rotate external drives every couple of weeks.  My programs aren't really properly backed up though, so that is a worry.

The only thing I know about BIOS is to not mess with it unless someone qualified is holding my hand and walking me through Step 1, Step 2, . . . .  I have checked to see if a BIOS update is available and there is, but all I saw in the limited information available was that it added support for some CPUs, when didn't sound at all relevant to anything I'm concerned with.

Whatever is selected in BIOS is, as far as I know, it is still exactly as it came from Dell.  I would need walk-through directions to check and note the settings.

The two installed hard drives have not been fiddled with in any way from the day the computer was delivered.  I selected two hard drives from Dell when setting up the build and I have used them 'as is' since that time.

I simply have two hard drives, labled "OS (C:)" and "DATAPART1 (D:)".  I would love to build learn to build my own computer and know that I paid Dell a hefty premium to build this one, but I'm not qualified to do it, and work 60+ hours a week, so it is only realistic to buy the best qualtity that I can afford in a computer and trust (or at least hope) that I'm getting the expertise that I'm paying for.  I've done a lot of work 'around the edges' of the IT world so have picked up tips and suggestions here and there, but I earnestly try not to be stupid enough to assume that I am knowledgeable or qualified to be fiddling around without an expert backing me up.

I try to keep security fairly high to keep attackers out (Malwarebytes and Avast);  I keep up on Windows and Firefox updates; I'm familiar with a variety of diagnostic tools for when a system glitch pops up for who knows what reason - but when scans and tests come up clean and I've gone through everything my notes and research suggests, I'm just stuck.

I've tried to keep an open mind that the trigger could be hardware or software, but my open mind hasn't helped yet.  I ran CHKDSK and it came out clean.  I tried to run sfc /scannow, but it doesn't work?  Won't open?  I have no idea if it would be of any help if it was opening and running, but at least I can now note it as something to be at least aware of.  From the Event Viewer I was able to learn that the host file was missing.  I ran the official Microsoft Fix it tools, which identified the problem, repaired the problem by installing the file, and the fix has held.  That was several weeks ago.

Somebody suggested that I run MemTest86, but when it wanted to me burn an ISO image to a boot disc and the steps for proceeding started looking a bit fuzzy to me . . . I decided not to go looking for trouble and did not proceed.  I've been trying to research anything that could help or get me headed in the right direction - but without accidentally doing something stupid.  I know enough to know that one little click can cause many big problems.  I try to know my limitations.  I need outside help.  At this point I don't have enough knowledge to know how to continue research on this on my own.

The bizarre thing is that every startup crash has happened either before I can enter the password to the machine, or very shortly afterward (minutes).  So far, every second attempt at a startup has been successful and I've been able to work as usual all day long with zero problems.  I'm very concerned that the next level of failure is that the machine will die and simply not start up again; as in ever.

C-drive has all of the computer's OS files; My Documents; absolutely everything.  D-drive has nothing except what I specifically put there.  It was a completely empty HD when I bought the computer.  I wanted two drives so that I could kind of spread out folders and files.  I've heard of  RAID 0, RAID 1, drive partitions, and whatnot, but have no experience with these things at all.  If I needed to do these kinds of things, I would need to hire in a pro to do it and then try to learn as much as possible while they do the work.

I use C-drive for all of my day-to-day stuff; all of my working folders and files.  I use D-drive as sort of an archive; closed projects; older tax files; stuff that I used to have a lot of involvement in but are not things I access all that often these days . . . .  And porn, that goes on D-drive. But it's clean.  Well, clean as in scanned every which way and secure.  I believe in safe sex online and offline.  Ha!

What's next?

PS - I had an update today that is going to require a system restart.  No way was I shutting down (my job depends on my computer), so opted out of the immediate restart.  This does mean that I will have to shutdown tonight and not be able to put the computer to sleep.  This will be like four days in a row and it hasn't started clean four days in a row in about eight weeks.  I'm not looking forward to getting out of bed tomorrow.

No "expert" of any sort am I...just another user like you who tries to learn from the mistakes made by others :).

What do you mean when you say that you cannot run the sfc /scannow command?

SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot - Windows 7 Forums - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

If it doesn't run...please tell exactly what happens when you try it.

"just another user like you who tries to learn from the mistakes made by others"

I've had or been involved with enough 'issues' over the years that I've even been able to help out a few people here and there (cleaning out low level spyware/malware mostly (the really nasty ones that replicate and whatnot are way beyond me)) but consider myself to be really low on the totem pole.  I love tech geeks and all the little tricks, but can hardly keep on top of the details and nuances of my own work.  I'd have to change careers to get good at this stuff. Ha!

Regarding sfc /scannow -  I'm not sure what happened in the previous attempts (?), but I just ran it with no problem.  I should automatically be an administrator for everything I do on this machine, but the only thing I did differently just now was specifically open Command Prompt to run as administrator.   Anyway, it went right to work so I feel a bit silly about whatever I slipped up on with that.  OTOH, it isn't a problem and it didn't find any problems, so good and good.  "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I got a clean startup this morning.  That's an amazing 4 days in a row.  As various scans and diagnositcs have come up clean, I've been hoping, like a child, that something in all of this scanning and testing would 'jigger' the issue to self-correct and it would just go away.  That's way too much to hope for, but I am planning to do another shutdown tonight (not cheat my way around the problem and just put it to sleep).

Any other ideas for scans / tests / diagnostics / what-have-you?  My gun is empty and I rarely have the luck of a problem 'going away'.  Every morning is a tense one these days.  4 days is great, but I've been fighting this for 8 weeks so am skeptical.

(It seems to me that I've had a fair number of Windows updates in the last 3 - 4 weeks that have required a restart for complete implementation, so I'm also kind of hoping that mabybe they caused / triggered this problem and maybe, just maybe, have also fixed it.?  Not likely I know; the child in me is wishing for magic.)

Well...strange things happen with Windows (and other) problems that appear..sometimes they do just vanish :).

If not, just repost to this topic and the folks here will try to assist.
