Hi

This Trojan will not go away. AVG detects it, tries to heal it, then says it needs to restart to complete the healing process which all goes fine till next scan and it's back again.

I also have a browser hi-jack issue and the following malicious programs are running and i can't get rid of them either - dcomcfg.exe & atmclk.exe

...resulting in constant advertisement for various anti-spyware software!! and repeated messages that my computer is infected by spyware!!

I use the following software (listed in the order in which i use them) without success - CWShredder, Ad-Aware SE, SpyBot Search & Destroy, ewido anti-malware, Stinger then AVG Free. Once i've gone through this process i then repeate the following in safe mode and it still brings me grief!!

Thank you for any possible help you can provide!!

Below is my HiJack This log:

Add remove programs - remove Logitech Desktop Messenger

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

That looks good but let's do one more thing - how are things????

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
(Start tapping F8 at the first black screen after power up)

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
Boot to normal mode
Post that log and a new HiJack log
"Nothing could be finer than to be in South Carolina ............"

Things are good!! Thanks so much. Haven't had any problems since so far and scans are coming up clean. I'll download the trial suite version and complete the rest of your instructions today and post the log tonight.

Thanks again!!

Sorry about the delay in replying.

The reason being that i have been unable to complete the final scan with the Full Trial Version of the EWIDO Suite in safe mode due to a seperate, on-going and unrelated Hardware issue (The computer just switches off on occasions for no good god damn reason and when you restart it, it behaves like its never happened and i have tried numerous fixes but i think it's possibly time for my mate to upgrade, what do ya think  !!) and Safe Mode seems to make it particulary volatile to this problem, continuously shutting off before a scan can be completed.

So my temporary solution was to run another Full System Scan with the Ewido Suite in normal mode but with the network off and ONLY the following basic processes running - csrss.exe, ee.exe, explorer.exe, lsass.exe, MSTask.exe, regsvc.exe, services.exe, smss.exe, spoolsv.exe, svhost.exe, System, System Idol Process, tskmgr.exe, and winlogon.exe

It probably isn't a substitute for running it in Safe Mode like you wanted, but since that wasn't an option i thought it might be better than nothing!!

Either way, thank you for all your help and your donated time. It avoided another Re-Format which i'm extremely grateful for!! I'm also now a little more educated on virus removal troubleshooting and hopefully won't have to bother people such as yourself to fix the same problem next time round. Thank you!!

Below is the final Ewido scan log and the updated HiJack This! log -
