I have a FUJITSU SIEMENS CELSIUS R640 , with 1 processor DualCore Intel Xeon 5110, 1600 MHz (6 x 267), 3 gigs of RAM that I bought a year ago with 80 euro. I was thinking to throw it - although it works perfectly - and buy a cheaper i3 or something. I do not care at all about games, I use the computer for office applications, but in the hard way: several sessions of Word, processing in Acrobat, ScanTailor, Corel etc etc ...
The upgrade would cost me about 100-120 euros and would be
2 x Intel Xeon E5345
2x4GB ECC Fully Buffered CL5 DDR2-667MHz PC2-5300 1.8V DIMM

The question is whether it is worth doing the upgrade or i can get more joy for the money if I buy a cheap i3 for 220 euros maximum.
Thank you.

According to Crucial you need to install the RAM in pairs.  I'd say you only need the RAM upgrade as it will give you a better performance boost than the processors.  I'd do the RAM upgrade and then decide if you feel the need to purchase the processors.
