Hello,

for last 15 years my computers were infected only once. Having strong security/ network and programming background i perfectly lived without any AV installed. Run scans every half a year or so and thats it. Helped thers to get rid of infections:) This time, however, it seems I've got something nasty, and cannot get rid of it myself and I need help.

I have pretty old samsung 10 inch laptop, which  can run winXP at most, which is used only for browsing web and writing emails. I eased the system as much as possible, leaving only  essential servises and samsung services running.

Issues started on jul20th, when i could not log-in to online banking page for first 3 times. the session was reset each time i entered creditentials. I logged in fourth attempt, then everything seem to be fine, and I forgot about it.

Then in the middle of August  after i brought my latop from sleep I couldn't open any web page successfully. I've got "the page cannot be displayed" error. I've checked everything I could, checked the ip addresses, the  network link (could not ping external IP addresses), i rebooted modem,   and then could not receive an IP address from DHCP server. This has never happen before. it was my laptop problem, not provider issue. I needed to reboot my laptop (and I only do this once a month or so) and laptop finally has managed to assign IP address from DHCP and I regained the connectivity ... for the next day only.

Then the next day it all happened again.  I rebooted laptop and put it to sleep  straight afterwards (had to run) , and after I brough it from sleep next day, the connecitvity was there.. I discovered that if I open browser (ff) and browse web page, then the next time I won't have the connetcitivity and reboot is needed.

Then, after couple of days, the reboot would not help for the whole work session. e.g. after couple of hours most of the pages would not open. The restart of the browser helped. both browsers i have - ff and ie8 -were affected.

Then after cople of days after every reboot I had connectivity for about an hour, and then i would either get "waiting for .. [url].", "done, but with errors" or server not found error.. The restart of the browser doesn't helped now. all pages were  desplayed corrupted in both browsers, JS seemed to be impacted. ping was successfull, but server reported as not available. the HTTP sniffer had clearly shown that my laptop resets the session by himself, also, laptop is constantly sending duplicate packets to the server, which cause slow  communication, small tcp window, etc .at this point it was clear that somehting is not right and I decided to run a online virus check.

And then I discovered that none of the AV pages load, and, generally, I only manage to open google first search page successfully (in 2 mins after laptop reboot).

So in about 5 hours I finally managed to squizz into this site and download adwcleaner from direct link, posted to somebody. I used a workaround  - in ff I run the JS debugger, which seems to slow all loaded scripts down and I had more seconds to load the direct link and download software.

Adwcleaner didn't report on anything special, it found the remainings of the previous infection from a couple of years back (left a laptop unatended for the children..), no infected exes no dlls..

but, after the scan, the both browsers started to work normally. I loaded Kaspersky, bit defender, eset pages and run everything what was free and avaiable. All AVs found nothing.

i've checked the FW log and found one suspcious connection  from my laptop to ip 202.248.45.8. google / scumware/ says the page on this IP is infected with JS/Iframe.IA trojan. The connection was made at August 16.

I then uninstalled java completely, upated all adobe components. rerun adwcleaner - clear.

a day has passed. and, today ater an hour of browsing, the same  "waiting for [url]" issue arose. Didn't see any js script errors yet, but i see that the pages reload by themselves

this page opened in 10 mins or so. For 5 mins the browser lags, for next 5 mins it, thanksfully, loads pages. Probably I am still infected. I appreciate any help to rid of this issue.

  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

update -

I had issues posting this reply, as either the page would not open, or post window is not loaded correctly. scripts do not run. I will try to add printcreens in another porst to show what I see

Hello, thank you for the reply.

To add to the post above, I didn't mentioned I've checked startups/ running processes/ services/ registries/ host files, I also tried safe mode and the issue persists.

I just finished to run all tools above, and somewhere in the middle (about an hour after pc booted up) i lost again an access to webpages, thanksfully, most links on this page were direct.

the symptoms are the same I have for past couple of days - the page doesn't load because of any error from 404 to 409, js scripts do not run, redirects do not run - e.g. can open google.com in 3 minutes, but cannot open any link, cause the URL is a google redirect. Or, the page can load, but straight after, the window gets refresh (like with F5) (I even hear a "click" in ie8) and then I see blank screen after, having "connected to [url]" or "waiting for [url]" messages in status bar.  both browsers are affected.

2 hours ago, after pc startup, everything worked just fine.

most of the tools didn't find anything

for Anti-Malware, I didn't find the button "copy to clipboard" for logs. the app window is bigger than my 10-inch screen, so I used export logs button in the upper right  of the window.

attaching logs below.

update -2.  i wanted to show the corrupted "blank" page i get , when page doesn't load.

but I can't attach anything here, nor I am able to post a printcreen to any other page - browser doesn't allow so far. so no printscreens this time.

in short, for last couple of days i receive completely white blank pages, but sometimes i get the same looking blank page with very very light rose background and non-displayed object box (e.g. something like missing component) for the whidth of the page in the top part of the page. The page looks blank, but the source code, however, contain the whole code of the page that should have been displayed. The source code of that looking page seem to have huge gaps / white spaces in JS scripts and Metadata.

I was getting the same looking  pink page for absolutely different sites, including this forum's topic, in both browsers. Therefore, I  think that both browsers are hijacked. on the other hand, i do not get any pop-ups, nor automatic redirects to a page that would open.

Which browser is giving you issues?

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

p22002970.gif Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Internet Explorer users - Click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on ESET Smart Installer to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check "Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications".
  • Click Advanced settings and make sure all 4 boxes are checkmarked (two of them are already checkmarked by default).
Do NOT checkmark "Use custom proxy settings"
  • Click the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Hello,

both browsers i have - FF31 and IE8 are impacted. They open pages for some minutes after laptop reboot, but soon after,  I am faced with the issues I mentioned above. During the issues, the interenet connectivity is fine, and servers themselved are reachable - and ping-able.

Please see the logs below.

I am attaching two ESET and two Adwcleaner logs -  As I run both of them as soon as I felt infected and managed to get connectivity. The second log file is made today. I would like to comment ESET scan results - all 4 entries reported today( and previously) are known to me before, as saved to HDD by my willl. These 4 were  always in exception list for all AVs I used before for years. john.exe is John The ripper, the password cracking tool I seldom use for test, trillian has special scripts for messagenger protocols, and in norton folder,  the keygen is reported.

I decided to allow ESET to remove these files today to avoid any misintrepretation of results. After all the scans, the issue persists :(

Hello, thank you for your reply.

I've done all the steps you liste above to reset both browsers.

Then, I needed to pay the bills (its the end of the month) so I needed to connect to online banking page. So I decided to run a packet sniffer for the  whole session to see If something is abnormal.

After filtering out the traffic, destined to the bank server, I was supprised to see that my browser has connected to at least 7 other pages, and downloaded wierd .JS scripts from them.

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: nginx
Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2014 17:00:49 GMT
Content-Type: application/x-javascript
Content-Length: 57
Connection: keep-alive
P3P: policyref=/w3c/w3c.p3p, CP=NON CUR ADM DEV PSA PSD OUR IND UNI NAV INT STA
Expires: Mon, 04 Dec 1999 21:29:02 GMT
Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, max-age=0
Pragma: no-cache
Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *
Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true
if (0) { setTimeout(function(){document.close();},100); }

Most of the pages were known to me, as were added to favourites. Therefore, I understood, that this happening when I open new TAB in FF, it lists all favourite pages along with "TOP sites". Not only are pages diplayed, they are fully loaded in the background. I found one russian page, added to "Top sites" list, that seem to relay to other site, and that site would load crappy JS in my browser. So every time I opened new Tab in FF, the scripts were loaded. So I purged all cache, removed this FF feture via about:config. Purged Cache again. Now packet sniffer doesn't show any script downloads, but on the other hand, I still see lots of retransmissions. But thanksfully, not resets, made by my laptop to AV sites:)

I am going to browse for a couple of days to understand if all this has solved my problem. Thanks ,

ele

Hello, so far so good. I had "loading..." issue with google page once yesterday, but it lasted for couple of minutes only and all other pages were loading normally at the same time. no page reload or reboot was needed.

I am going post final update on Sunday - a week after I took last actions.

Thank you for your help!

Hello,

i haven't noticed the errors re-occuring.  Therefore, I think the issue, whatever it was,  is solved, and the thread can be closed now.

Thank you for your help!

You're very welcome p22002759.gif

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:
