recovering data off a possibly bad hard drive

is there a software tool out there that I  can use?  I have a hard drive reader (toaster) windoz hangs when I try to access the hard drive via explorer.

Download PartedMagic. Burn the iso file and see if you can access the files with the File Manager. It's linux based so you may have a better chance reading the files. There are additional tools on the disk which can be used to recover data and also to determine health of the drive. But first, see if you can read the drive with Parted Magic and we will go from there..
