Hello, I've recently encountered a problem trying to remove malware from my machine.  I was experiencing browser redirects and occasional pop-up ads, and after attempting to clean the machine with several tools to no avail, I decided to reformat the hard drive and start fresh.  Unfortunately, after a few days, I started noticing symptoms again.  While I have been unable to clean the machine, Roguekiller came up with several PUM.DNS entries, and a GMER scan found unknown MBR code.  This seems to indicate I may have a MBR infection that survived the reformat.  As such, I have tried repairing the mbr with aswmbr, but the program (and frequently the computer) crashes before it can finish scanning.  I've also tried using bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot, but this hasn't solved the problem.

I would very much appreciate any help that I can get in trying to remove this infection.  I've enclosed a DDS log as well as the aforementioned GMER log with this message in case they may help.

The results of my DDS scan are shown below.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/545367 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I am still experiencing malware symptoms such as redirects and adware.  For a more detailed description, please see my initial post.

As instructed, I have run DDS again.  Its results are below, and I have attached the second text file with this message.

Thank you for your help.  At the moment, the computer seems to be running fine at some times, but very slowly at others.  In particular, browsing is often slower than normal and often unstable ("internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close," "[site] is not responding").  I'm also receiving notifications that "a popup was blocked from ar.voicefive.com."  I've run all the scan tools as asked and will post the results below (addition.txt is attached as specified).

I'm actually going to have to attach the FRST log, it's too long to post even alone.  As such, I've attached it with this message.

    TDSSKillerSuspicious-1.png
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • Important: Do NOT change the default action on your own unless instructed by a malware Helper! Doing so may render your computer unbootable.
    TDSSKillerMal-1.png

    TDSSKillerCompleted.png
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
===

Download http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe (aswMBR.exe) to your desktop. Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log, and save it to your desktop. (Note - do not select any Fix at this time) <- IMPORTANT
  • Please paste the contents of that log in your next reply.
There shall also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder. Please attach that zipped file in your next reply.

Did the TDSSKiller tool find anything bad?
Your MBR is fine.

To stop the redirects and occasional pop-up ads try this.

Click the StartBtn.gif button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, double-click Command Prompt.

at the cursor type:
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (A space between g and / is needed)

ipconfig /release

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then hit Enter, type Exit, hit the Enter key.

You may need to run CMD - Command Prompt on Vista - Windows 7/8 with Elevated Privilege
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/
<<<>>>

If that fails to remove the Redirects try this.
...

Reset all you Browsers.

Reset Chrome...
Click on "Customize and control Google Chrome":

p22003758.gif

Click "Settings" then "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the screen.

Click "Reset browser settings" button.

Restart Chrome.

I gave it a day just to be sure, but everything seems to be in working order.  Thank you very much for your help, I was at my wit's end trying to clean the machine.  Just for future reference, what was causing those symptoms?  Did I successfully clear my MBR previously (from what GMER picked up in my initial post) and mistakenly assume it was still infected due to the redirects?  Were my DNS settings still compromised/known so they could be hijacked after I reformatted my hard drive?

Again, thank you so much for all the help!
