I am using Windows 8.1 SL and according to the Device Manager the drivers for my Video Controller and SM Bus Controller are not installed.

I tried to update the drivers from the properties window but was unsuccessful, an online search was also done automatically. The manufacturer is listed as unknown.

What shall I do ?

Hi, Its me replying to myself !!

I did what I should have done in the first place, I visited the computer manufacturer's website.

There I downloaded their detection tool (allowing access to my computer again !!! - no other choice really) which told me that I was missing 2 drivers which I already knew about. There is a button (3 actually) which says "Install" next to the identified problem devices. I dutifully clicked them and each time it brought me back to the download center so I could choose which drivers I wanted to download. Now If I knew the answer to that I would not have downloaded, installed and given permission for them to look inside my computer in he first place. A pity this forum frowns upon profanity else I could give a much clearer picture of the frustration I

felt with this little runaround which took up my whole day.

Anyway..... after poking around a bit I took a guess and downloaded a driver for the intel chipset and another for AMD video controller.

Keeping my fingers crossed that these were the right ones, I clicked to install. The first one went well so I tried the 2nd driver.

Luckily for me all went well and no more messages telling me that I have problem devices on my NEW laptop.

If there is a lesson in all this I hope somebody can tell me what it is because all I've ended up with is a lost day and frayed nerves.

Thanks for reading. Cheers.....
