I am using Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 660s and the mouse is a wired optical mouse that was included.

When I click to open a new tab my mouse opens several at once.  If I click to open a link it also opens several of the same in new windows.  When I attempt to highlight a word it will highlight it but not long enough to copy it.  I need to keep doing it until it works.

I've checked Malwarebytes to see if there was anything that might be causing it but there was nothing.

I also changed the settings to lower the speed of the mouse but that didn't help.

There doesn't appear to be a setting for click speed.

I also looked in Firefox to see if there was a different setting but I don't see anything that will change it from doing what it is doing.

I also cleaned it and looked for dust or anything that might be affecting it but it is clean.

I don't know what else to do except to get a new one but if it is the settings then that won't change anything and I'd really like to fix it if possible.

Thanks.

I have encountered this in the past, though it wasnt every time, my hands tend to get a little sweaty to my fingers sticka tiny bit to the mouse buttons, when lifting I would actually pick up the button a little then it would slap down and bounce a few times causing one or two clicks.

Other than that it could be a faulty switch in the mouse, in that case I would suggest getting a new mouse

Thanks for the response - it is definitely the mouse - even when I keep my hand off it and click using a finger it opens many tabs.

Those wired mice of any type show their age  with just those faults, double or intermittent clicks, an attempt to click, hold and moves results in a drop.  They are cheap ($10) and I buy two at a time just to have a spare.
