help i think my mac is infected with somethin

I have a mac...my college kids use it..and i think they have made my mac sick...it will not update old virus soft wear and now will not download any of the new either...help@@ how do i know and what do i do

You will need to give us some more info in order for someone to be able to help. Which version of OS X are you running (Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, etc.)? What is the name of the "old virus software"? What have you tried downloading that isn't working? Please be more specific.
