I was initially helped in this thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/543664/cant-download-files-from-email/

I went through the whole process and followed the instructions completely but noticed after completing everything that one folder that I have been using exclusively for saving new files for the past few months was filled with duplicated files.  This occurred before I posted for help at BleepingComputer about an issue I was having, not being able to download attachments from my email, attachments I sent to myself from home so I could print them at work (the work computer is the one with issues.)

I was instructed to run DDS and the log is below.  I will attach the "attach" file as a zip file.

I await further instructions.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that I found a number of files that I did not knowingly save to this folder that has duplicated files.  The list of those suspicious file extentions:

.ftpquota

_INST32I.EX
_ISDEL.EXE

_setup.dll

_sys1.cab
_user1.cab
data1.cab

layout.bin

deptodoc.btr
doctodep.btr
linkinfo.btr

botinfs.cnf
bots.cnf
service.cnf
services.cnf
structure.cnf
writeto.cnf

desktop.ini
setup.ini

lang.dat
os.dat (2)

setup.ins

service.lck

setup.lid

data.tag (2)

Plus an "fpdbw" icon

I also noted that when I tried to create a folder inside this folder to store all these suspicious files, that I was unable to do so.  One file caught my eye, "Service.lck."  Does that lock services in this folder?

Thanks.

UPDATE 8-19

When I got to work today and accessed the one folder in question, all but one file had been deleted.  I guess I really do have a virus on that computer.

I had an Excel file with various passwords (mostly forums) and when I tried to delete it, I got a msg stating that the file was open in Avast (my AV) and that it couldn't be deleted.  I tried again and was able to delete it, but the file was renamed (not by me) to $RTOKY6Y.

I will not restart that computer until I hear from you.

Since I've developed these new problems since running the DDS program, I'm providing you as much information as I can to help you decipher what's going on.

I need some information, now that I have experiencing some tangible issues - the contents (except one file) of my main folder in question have been deleted.

I have back-up from about a month ago on an external hard drive.  At the time I backed up the files, I did know suspect that I was having potential malware issues.  I need to check those saved files and make sure they don't have a problem as well.  I have a lot of very important work I need to retrieve.  How can I check it?  I don't want to check it on the computer with issues.  Since my AV didn't pick up the infection (and neither did malwarebytes), I'm concerned that malware can 'hide.'  I will check it with another computer (on which I've disabled auto play.)  What is the best way to check those files?

Can you discover what virus erased my files?  Can I check on the infected computer and get any information about it in the Administrative Tool logs.

The rest of my files look okay, though as noted when I tried to delete a file from my desktop, I had the problem already noted.

THanks.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I will follow the above instructions when I am at work.  I am self-employed and don't have work every day.  I wish I did.  I have kept the computer turned off awaiting insturctions as files are disappearing and I didn't know if staying connected to the internet could result in more deletions.  I will do as outlined and send you a report, though I am still learly about staying online with the computer.

I have misplaced my OS reinstallation disk.  I've been looking for it for months.  I don't know what Toshiba's policy is about replacements as I did register the computer when I bought it.

A summary of my problem

I first contacted you when I was unable to download files from email, files I had sent to myself via two different Yahoo email accounts.  I am self employed and work at home and email files to myself I need to print.  I had that problem for weeks, even a few months before contacting BleepingComputer.

I hooked up with one of your technicians and he took me through a battery of programs.

MiniToolBox
TDSSkiller
AdwCleaner
Junkware Removal Tool
ESET Online Scan

I posted all the reports from these steps.

Next we did MalwareBytes
TFC

Everything looked good from your end.  However, I have been reorganizing my files (thousands of them) using an external hard drive.  I thought I was being extemely careful.  However, I started noticing duplication of some files in the one main folder I've been using for all new work.  I also noticed some file extensions that I did not recognize and made note of that in my initial contact with you regarding this incident.  That is all documented on my original thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/543664/cant-download-files-from-email/

I started to delete the duplication even before I contacted you.  After I completed the series of steps suggested by your technician, and after I ran the TDSS report posted when I contacted you, I opened that folder the other day and it was empty, over a GB of files were gone.  I turned off the computer and haven't booted since, but today I did and all the files are again in that folder.  Not only did I note they were not listed, but I checked the folder content size and it confirmed it was empty.

When I realized the files were missing, I decided to delete an Excel file I have with passwords for various forums.  I got an error msg stating that the file could not be deleted because it was open in Avast.  I tried again and was able to delete it but I noticed that the file had a totally new name as it was deleted, a name starting in a "$."

Here is the new DDS report.

If my DDS report looks good, I might be okay.  I just noticed that somehow I copied the contents of the folder within the same folder with duplicate names.  One folder (the important one with all my work) looks okay and I have another folder by the same name that in that same tree that is empty.  I might have accidentally copied it into the same directory.  I hope this makes sense.

Greetings LittleGreenDots and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. :thumbup2:

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. :)
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • When you post your reply, use the Replytopic.jpg button instead.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Followtopic.jpg button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
  • Now let's get started :thumbup2:
===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far. While I review our situation please run the below for me.

===================================================

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

--------------------
  • Download Farbar Recover Scan Tool for either 32 bit or 64 bit systems and save it to your desktop <<< Important
  • If you are unsure if you have 32 bit or 64 bit simply download and try one. If that doesn't run properly the other one should
  • Double click the icon
  • Click Yes to the disclaimer
  • Make sure the Addition.txt box is checked
  • Click Scan and allow the program to run
  • Click OK on the Scan complete screen, then OK on the Addition.txt pop up screen
  • 2 Notepad documents should now be open on your desktop.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of both in your reply
===================================================

System Summary Information

--------------------
  • Press the windows key Windows_Logo_key.gif + r on your keyboard at the same time
  • Type msinfo32 and press Enter
  • Left click on System Summary
  • Click File, Save, and name the file Summary
  • Zip and attach the file to your reply
===================================================

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:
  • FRST results
  • Addition log
  • System Summary Information

Gary

If I do not reply within 24 hours please send me a Personal Message.
