Note that MalwareBytes, Avast, ESET, and AdwCleaner have all been run on my machine and none of them show anything off. I had some problems earlier that SFC corrected, and now SFC runs without finding any problems. I don't believe this is a malware/virus issue but a simple case of WMI corruption.

Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/bJp40cqm33YYud4Yil02eoK

My computer was becoming unresponsive occasionally about once a day recently, forcing me to initiate a hard restart using the reset button on the computer case. I began using miniToolbox immediately after each time, and every time a WMI error showed up:

Error: (08/16/2014 02:20:21 PM) (Source: WinMgmt) (User: )
Description: //./root/CIMV2SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 990x80041003

It found 30 missing class definitions [(WBEM_E_NOT_FOUND)], several of which were in the CIMV2 namespace.

I first tried to recompile the .MOF files using MOFCOMP, but based on the output using the CorrelateClassAndProvider parameter, it appears that these MOF file simply do not exist.

Then I tried to refresh the WMI Class provider buffer with WINMGMT.EXE /SYNCPERF (suggested in the WMIDIag report), but was told that /SYNCPERF is not a valid parameter.

Next I tried to validate the WMI repository operations using

WMIDiag WriteInRepository=Root

But I don't know how to interpret  the report from that.

At this point I'd like someone to hold my hand. From what I can gather, there are 4 possible routes from here:
A. Somehow use the output of the the most recent report, (using WriteInRepository)
B. Run WMIDiag ShowMOFErrors and somehow use this output (how?)
C. Stop the service and try to use the service to refresh the repository, as described at http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/21413-rebuilding-the-wmi-repository:
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.

a. sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. net stop winmgmt

2. Run the following commands.
a. Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%\System32\wbem
b. Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%\System32\wbem

3. Re-enable the WMI service and then reboot the server to see how it goes.
a. sc config winmgmt start= auto

D. Rebuild the repository manually. [Also described in the same post.]

I have made a system restore point, a system restore disk, and backed up an image of my system.

Below is a copy of the most recent report.

Try this.

Press the Windows key and the X key at the same time.

In the menu that opens click on Command Prompt (Admin), this will open the Elevated Command Prompt.

In the command prompt copy and paste the commands below one at a time, each command needs to be followed by pressing Enter.

winmgmt /standalonehost

winmgmt /resetrepository

I don't think that the Windows Key + X thing works on Windows 7. Instead I searched for "command," did a right-click and said "Run as Admin." I hope that accomplishes what is needed.

When I did /standalonehost I got the following messages:

Service configuration changes succeeded.

Please stop and restart Winmgmt services for changes to take effect.

Then I did /resetrepository

I got the following message:

WMI repository reset failed

Error code: 0x8007041B

Facility: Win32

Description: A stop control has been sent to a service that other services are dependent on.

Do I need to run

net stop winmgmt

before trying winmgmt /resetrepostory?

I keep forgetting that Windows key and the X key only works in Windows 8.

In Windows 7 type cmd in the Search programs and files.

When it appears under Apps right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

This will open the Elevated Command Prompt.

If you did this and received the WMI repository reset failed this pair of commands will not work.

Let's try rebuilding the WMI.

Run the following commands one at a time followed by pressing Enter.

net stop winmgmt

Then go to the C:\Windows\system32\wbem directory and delete the Repository directory

net start winmgmt

cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem

for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %i

for %i in (*.exe) do %i /RegServer

cd /d %windir%\sysWOW64\wbem

for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %i

for %i in (*.exe) do %i /RegServer

I ran those commands and then ran the Diagnostic again. It looked pretty similar. I'm stilling missing 30 classes.

I noticed that when I ran

net stop winmgmt

I got the option to stop the two services that depended on winmgmt [IP helper and some other service I forgot].

Since the reason that the resetrepository command failed was because of dependencies, would it make sense to first run

net stop winmgmt

and then try to run the resetrepository command?

Hmmm... I ran WMIDiag on another computer and got the same results. It appears that the same 30 MOF files are missing.

I wonder if I have mis-diagnosed the source of my problem. It is conceivable that the error code I noted is being generated on startup or restart, thus making it appear to be the cause of the problem.

Unfortunately, if this WMI is not the source of the problem, I don't know what is. I'm going to re-run ESET again (I cleaned out a bunch of data files before making my backup, so it won't take 14 hours this time).

I'll take more care in noting the time that my computer becomes non-responsive next time and see if this error coincides with that time rather than the time of shutdown or startup. If I've mis-diagnosed the problem, I'll close the thread (or request someone else to).

What has led you to believe that there is a problem with WMI?

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

speccy7_zpsfa02105f.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

speccy3_zps1791b093.png

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

There's a program called "Windows Repair" that can help to repair WMI.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows-repair-all-in-one/

Run the program with - at least - the box "Repair WMI" ticked. (perhaps you need to tick all boxes ??). If you only need to repair WMI this program should do the trick.

This is actually a mistake on Microsoft's end, which causes the WMI registration to remain on the DVD or ISO. According to Microsoft, "These events are not indicative of any issue in the system and can be safely ignored." However, there is a fixit tool and/or script you can run to eliminate them.

dc3, I had thought I had a WMI error because it _looked_ like there was a particular WMI error in my log file each time my computer went unresponsive. Couple that with WMIDiag.vbs showing 30 missing *.MOF files, and it led me to think that was the problem.

But my other computer (which runs fine) is missing the same 30 files.

One new piece of info: the last time my computer went unresponsive, I just let it alone for half an hour. When I came back, it was back to normal. I did not see any errors in the EventViewer with timing connected to the period of non-responsiveness.

ESET, Adw, MBAM, and Avast all come up clean other than minor things (like the fact that my home page is my gmail inbox).

Here is my speccy report: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/R0QHO1PM2b0DTqNyB2MmR13

When I look at the S.M.A.R.T. attributes of your SSD then it seems your SSD has problems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

(Do they apply to a SDD as well ?)

Download GSMARTCONTROL

http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/

and run it. Post a screenshot of the results of the "Attributes" tab.

The reallocated sector count is 2.

Sectors which have read, write, and verification errors are marked as reallocated and the data is move to a good sector.  The S.M.A.R.T attributes indicate that this could be a failing SSD.  But going by the installation date of the operating system (05/09/2013) the SSD is only 15 months old, but is could fail.  If this is your personal computer and isn't being used for a business you could take a wait and see attitude, the SSD could last for a while.  If you are using this for a business, don't take a chance on it, replace it.

If you take the wait and see attitude, I would suggest backing all of your important data to removable media, like an external hdd, flash drive/s, DVDs, etc.  This is something which should be done no matter what condition your SSD or HDD are in.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
