Hi, I recently discovered in my school that my flash drive was infected with trojan. The antivirus at school was Faronics. However, in my place Malwarebytes and MSE did not discover anything. My question is: Did Malwarebytes not detect that trojan? Is my computer possibly has an infection that Malwarebytes did not detect? If so, it is now possible than my computer, external hard drive are infected as well? I plugged in the flash drive to another computer as well.

Please run the following:

Please download the appropriate version of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST.exe) from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/dl/81/ (for 32bit systems)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/dl/82/ (for 64bit systems)
save it to your desktop.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
NEXT
  • Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool.
  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
  • Click Scan
    • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
    • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.

Hello, thank you for your help

I ran the aswMBR for the flash drive and the main HD. After, finally one of the multiple tries, the scan completed successfully with me being able to save the results. However, Firefox wouldn't work. I restarted the pc and it seems to be working fine now. The aswMBR.txt is empty, even thought that is where the the aswMBR results have saved to. The MBR.dat seems to be empty as well, because it says 0 bytes as its size. However, I still attached the zipped file like you said.

The computer is running fine, except for the fact that it is a little slow(I haven't reinstalled OS since last year). No issues. I was just concerned of that Trojan that was found I believe in DRPSu12.3-Final program, which is a driver pack I got on the internet. I know that it is risky but it was fine( the AV might have found something there before)until last Trojan was found. With the USBs transferring on multiple computers, I was concerned that the infection could have spread to my or from mine pc to someone's else.  What are your thoughts about his? It looks like the only thing that was found was a KMservice. I deleted it.

it looks ok but let's run the following to make sure there are no infected files:

please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

US Link: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
EU Link: http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner/

Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 users will need to right click on their Internet Explorer shortcut, and select Run as Administrator
• Note: For browsers other than Internet Explorer, you will be prompted to download and install esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. Click on the link and save the file to a convenient location. Double click on it to install and a new window will open. Follow the prompts.
• Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
• Click the blue Run ESET Online Scanner button
• Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
• Click Start
• When asked, allow the program to install the "OnlineScanner.cab" activex control by clicking the Install button
• Once the activex control is installed, on the next screen click on Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications
• Click on Advanced Settings
• Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked.
• Ensure these options are ticked
○ Scan archives
○ Scan for potentially unsafe applications
○ Enable Anti-Stealth technology
• Click Start
• Wait for the scan to finish
• When the scan is done, if it shows a screen that says "Threats found!", then click "List of found threats", and then click "Export to text file..."
• Save that text file on your desktop. Attach the log as a reply to your next reply..
• Close the ESET online scan, and let me know how things are now.

The ESET scanner did not give me the option to select the below options.

○ Scan archives
○ Scan for potentially unsafe applications
○ Enable Anti-Stealth technology

I will not close the scanner with the results because I am not sure if it will remember the results without rescanning again.

I think those threats are not a big deal, right?

Do you want me to clean them now?

Ok. I closed the ESET. It needs to run again for those threats to appear. I was able to see the scanning checkmark options when I clicked on Advanced Options.

The scanner removed those files, but manually check and make sure they are deleted.

They were installation files that are bundled with adware (the type that will install an unwanted toolbar if you forget to "opt out")

Please advise how the computer is running now and if there are any outstanding issues.

I ran ESET a second time where I selected the options that you asked for. However, I didn't disable the AV during this time. The scan took almost 22 hours. The second time 2 more PUPs were found.

The pc doesn't have any issues. So, if the Trojan was present, it would most likely appear in those logs?

looks ok, again another couple of installer files bundled with adware (most will come that way nowadays unfortunately)

The machine appears to be clean.

If you want to disinfect the USB's run the following:

Download, install and run Panda USB Vaccine

The usb vaccination performed by this program will permanently disable any autorun.inf functionality of your usb stick. After the vaccination you will be able to use the usb stick normally and files (even malware) can be copied to/from it, however they will be prevented from executing automatically. This vaccination can only be reversed with a reformat of the usb stick.

Download and save Panda USB Vaccine from >>>here<<<
  • Double click the file USBVaccineSetup.exe to start the installation.
  • During setup uncheck the option to Run Panda USB Vaccine automatically when computer boots.
  • Start Panda USB Vaccine.
  • Insert your usb-stick, choose the correct drive letter (i.e "F:\") and click Vaccinate USB.
  • When it's finished, close the program.
  • You can delete the downloaded USBVaccineSetup.exe.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Download TFC to your desktop
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish it's job
    • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
    • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.
