Hello,

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 1.2 gb RAM Intel Centrino...Since many years it has been becoming more and more sluggish...I have tried scanning defragmenting and the rest of the steps mentioned in a post for such problems but sadly nothing has worked until now...My total hard disk capacity is low-total is 38 gb (C and D drives) and free space is 5 GB. Therefore, it is pretty impossible to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8. Please help me.

- 5 GB free disk space is not much. Run the build-in "Disk Cleanup" tool. It increases the amount of free diskspace. Delete the entire "C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution" folder as well.

- Disable the "System Restore Point" function. Restart and enable the System Restore Point feature again. Now you got rid of A LOT OF system restore points.

If you're confident enough then you can delete the following folders:

- "C:\Windows\$hf_mig$".

- The "C:\Windows" folder contains a number of folders of which the name are "written" in blue characters and start with "KB...........". If you're sure you don't want the un-install previous XP updates then you can delete these folders as well.

Hello,

Thanks for your quick reply...http://speccy.piriform.com/results/FJLd47RmOH4XYp7vlX8JFJ6

The other file has been attached...

By the way, I already have deleted all the system restore points and run the disk cleanup. After this I have 5 GB(2 GB on C and 3 GB on D). Sorry, I am not very sure about deleting those files as I have once messed up with windows with very bad results on another laptop-it had to be formatted 5 times. So in case of my current slow laptop I am reluctant to do so.

- I delete all those folders all the time and never had any problems.

Suggestions:

- Memory usage is VERY high (90%). Especially Firefox uses A LOT OF memory. I assume your harddisk is working overtime ? Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces  memory usage every 15 minutes and let it collapse the file cache as well.

- I see a 256 MB memory module and a 1 GB module. Does Windows (not Speccy) recognize you have a 1.2 GB memory ? If your system can handle 2 GB (or more) then replace the 256 MB module with a larger one (e.g. 1 GB).

- Enable the Firewall ! Or does Norton have a firewall ? Perhaps you can disable one or more anti virus shields ? I have an AVAST antivirus and have disabled 3 of the 5 AV shields.

- Move as much files/data as possible from the C: drive to the D: drive. The amount of free disk space shrinking with only 1,2 GB of memory is a good recipe for a sluggish system. Do you REALLY need all those files ? Copy A LOT OF files you don't or rarely use to e.g. an USB stick. With a LOT of files less the defragmentation program works much better/faster.

- Install a larger harddisk (second hand ??).

- Use Piriform's Defraggler to defragment the swapfile. A fragmented swapfile slows down your system as well.

- Do you really need both Norton & Trend Micro's "Office scan" running ? "Office Scan" seems to be an Antivirus as well. No wonder your system is slow. I personally would disable/remove one of them.

- Do you really need Norton Utilities ? I consider the things Norton Utilities offers to be useless. Install Tweaking's Registry Backup instead.

- Do you really need JAVA ? If not then remove JAVA. Otherwise update to the latest version.

- Update your BIOS. It's from 2006.

- Is your harddisk constantly busy reading/writing ? What does your harddisk light tell you ? Reducing memory usage with Cleanmem means that Windows can reduce writing/reading data to/from the swapfile on harddisk. And disk I/O is comparatively slow.

- No, Speccy says the Windows Firewall is off !!! But is the Norton Firewall running ? You only need one Firewall.

- Go to the HP website and search under "Support" and/or "Drivers" whether there's a BIOS update available for your system.

- Did you go through the other suggestions ?

yes..somewhat..I have already copied files from C: to D: drive...still it has 2 gb on c. I am downloading cleanmem..however, the trend micro uninstallation failed as I do not have the uninstall key...I have also tried the uninstaller that uninstall it without the key but it did not work..As for module upgrade, I do not know what are those...any suggestions?

By the way, just see whether there is any bios update-I do not understand whether there is any or not-link to that      http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=472196&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D1093%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken#BIOS

Most anything that has to do with Yahoo will also slow a computer, in part due to the adware placed on the computer.

As Willy22 has stated, check with HP on for the BIOS update. You can install HP Support Assistant, this normally shows these things, it's usually pre-installed on HP computers. This app will also check for any driver updates needed.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/pl_ot_ob_ds_pd/hpsupportassistant_cc/dt

However I don't see a later BIOS than what you have in the link that you provided, so it may be of no use. It still doesn't hurt to see, if HP Support Assistant offers nothing, remove the app.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

- About memory modules:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_module

http://ask-leo.com/how_much_memory_do_i_really_need_for_windows_xp.html

- These 2 websites offer a system scan tool to see how much memory and what kind of type of memory your system can handle:

http://www.memoryupgradecompany.com/HPMemoryUpgrade.html

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner

Perhaps you can buy a second hand memory module ? On Ebay ?

- If you can't remove "Office Scan" then perhaps you can disable it from running upon startup. Use Ccleaner to disable as much programs as possible, including "Office Scan".

- As time goes by programs will use more and more memory (a.k.a. "memory leaks"). That's why, even with more memory, I would recommend to keep Cleanmem installed/running, especially when one has only 1 or 2 GB of memory. Windows XP has a number of "tricks" up its sleeve that increase overall system performance. Keeping memory usage as low as possible (with Cleanmem) allows to Windows to put those "tricks" to better use.

- Another thing to speed up your system is to regularly defragment (every week or month) your system with the build-in Defragmentation program. It works "hand in glove" with those "tricks" mentioned above. But for the defragmentation program to run properly, it requires (much) more free space on your harddisk.

- I would replace the 256 MB module with a 1 GB module.

- Do you really need "Norton Utilities" ? There're a lot of  FREE tools that do the same job and don't keep running after start up. (But I am not too familiar with Norton software).
