Hi folks my name is Al, I'm new here and a bit of an amateur when it comes to the specifics of software but here goes:

About a year or so ago I got a virus on my computer.  It turned my desktop black, made all my folders/files hidden and a window appeared prompting me to buy a code in order to remove it.  I jumped on my phone and googled it to find it was common and someone had posted such a key on a forum.  I entered the key and deleted all the files I thought were associated with the virus.  All seemed well.

Not really thinking about it at the time - a new problem developed with windows update.  It was error 300008 or something similar (cant remember the specific code) and basically windows would not search for new updates.  I ignored it for a while as everything else was working fine but a month or so ago I decided to try and fix it.  So I did a huge amount of google searching and found a series of forum posts on the MS site and elsewhere.  The solutions to the problem were pretty complex and involved coding and other stuff that was beyond me.  I ran adwcleaner and nothing was wrong.  Eventually I got lucky and discovered that it was caused by the SoftwareDistribution Folder being "hidden".  So i unticked the hidden box in the settings and reset my laptop.  Upon restart it was working - windows had found like 180 updates.  I went through them and updated the lot, excluding silverlight and IE as I use chrome.

At this point I thought my computer was running fine until this past couple of weeks it had been running a little slow.  It would startup fine but whenever I plug a USB drive in it takes longer for the icon to appear in My Computer.  I don't know if it is related or not but now I am a little skeptical as to the status of my computer.  I noticed in the task manager that there was an SVChost process that was taking up about 300-400mb, the cpu usage was over 50% and 60% for the physical memory.  I am the only user of the computer and as far as I know there is only one user account (me) but it asks for admin permission to access some folders and I CANNOT access the Config.msi folder at all (is that normal?)

Basically after the virus changed all of the files and folders to "hidden", I am unsure as to what folders/files should be hidden or if there are dodgy things left on my computer.

I realise there is a lot to read and any help is appreciated.
Al

Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
