Hi, over the last couple of weeks I've been getting popups very frequently when I use IE, so I think I've been infected. I keep my virus-scan (AVG), anti-spyware (Spybot, AdAware), and trojan scanner (Ewido) up to date, yet though don't turn up anything. I have switched to browsing with firefox, and I don't experience any unwanted popups, but whenever I use IE, I get the popups again. Here is my hijackthis log (Note: I have used a thin client to connect to my work site in the past, and I don't want the URL posted in a public forum, so I am replacing it in the log with "legit_work_url", in no other way has the log been modifed). Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Still having problems. As soon as I open IE, I get popups that I know aren't coming from the site I'm going to. Ran the online scanner (Trend Micro) and stinger and nothing was found except tracking cookies. Here is the updated hijakthis log (note I've masked my work URL to "legit_work_url" in the logfile, so that I don't have to post it in a public forum):

What exactly are the popups stating and are they for a particular software?

It's a number of different ones, but the two that come up most frequent is one for a bogus anti-virus software (I believe it's called WinVirus or something similar) and a "Registry Cleaner", that I cannot get off the screen without killing IE from the taskbar because it has a popup window that forces me to click either "Ok" or "Cancel" when I know that both will install the software.
The recent most recent time I tried (just now) the popup was from amaena.com (another bogus anti-virus site). It triggered as soon as I loaded my normal startup page www.cnn.com (non-hijacked). Again I experience no unwanted popups with firefox

Rename hijackthis.exe to ht.exe and then please create a new hijackthis log and post it as a reply to this topic.

Download VundoFix from the following location and save it to your desktop:

VundoFix download link

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the vundofix.exe program.

When the program loads, right click on the white text area and select the Add more files? menu option.

In the first field enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll and then click on the Add File(s) button. Then click on the Close Windows button.

Finally, click on the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click the YES button.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click the OK button.
  • When the computer has shutdown, turn your computer back on.
When you are back at the desktop, post a brand new hijackthis log as a reply to this topic.

Agreed...can you submit the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php so I can infect myself and devise a method that will work.

Hi, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I was at work. I submitted the ssttr.dll file with the malware submission form as you requested. Your most recent instructions were a bit confusing because:
1) I cannot add manually files to vundofix when I run it as a task, I don't get any popup to add files when I right-click...I only get this option when I run it without running as a task
2) When I attempt to add "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.*" from add files (when I'm not running it as a task), it does not show up on the resulting page (unlike C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll), so when I click fix, it only attempts to delete ssttr.dll and fails with the same log message I posted before.

Well, I deleted vundofix and redownloaded it, and now at least I don't have any problems adding files while it's running as a task. However, the other results I've been getting haven't changed it all. Putting C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.* in the add files doesn't appear to add anything, only ssttr.dll shows up, and I'm still getting the "could not delete" message in vundofix.txt log and my hijack log looks the same , and I'm still getting the popups.

Ok spoke to the developer of vundofix and was told to try something else:

Click on start, then run, and in the Open: field copy and paste the following:

rundll32.exe ssttr.dll,CreateMainProc

Then press the OK button. When done, reboot your computer and delete c:\Windows\System32\ssttr.dll and post a new log.
