I had a custom built Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC built about 4 years or so ago by AVA computers. It's been a great machine.......however......in the past several months I have been having "not responding" problems. For example: I will be using Adobe Lightroom and after working for anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours without any problems the PC will freeze. At the top left of the Lightroom program (on the bar that runs across the top of the program) the words "not responding" will appear. Then nothing on the PC works. It just freezes. I can't click on anything. Nothing happens if I try to launch another program, if I hit control alt delete nothing happens. The cursor will still move around but clicking on anything gets nothing in return. After a minute or 2 or 3 if I click back on the screen in Lightroom it turns a see-through white color. From experience that tells me that it will be unfreezing in a few seconds or up to a minute or more. Then everything comes back to normal until the next "not responding" situation hits. Could be 20 minutes. Could be 3 hours. Could be 3 minutes. It's completely random when these things hit. It happens every single day several times a day. (incidentally....remember when I said I clicked on programs and hit control alt delete and nothing happened?.....well.....when the PC comes back to life all those things I clicked on a few minutes back now engage and "come on" all at the same time......it's like if one of the things I clicked on was Google Chrome browser then that will come on....albeit 3 minutes after I clicked on it) . By the way......I mentioned Lightroom as an example above but the problem happens with ANY software.

Waiting for these random "not responding" freezes to un-freeze can be maddening...especially when working on things that really matter. I have tried everything I know might help. I'm using Norton AV, Malwarebytes, I have run numerous diagnostic checks on the RAM, HD and system. Everything checks out OK. I have cut and pasted my PC build from AVA computers below.

I will do whatever it takes to fix this problem. If I need new hardware then I'll replace the parts. If anyone here can help me I would be extremely grateful to you. This thing is driving me out of my mind.

**note** All my drivers are absolutely up to date. No problems with out of date drivers.

If your problems go back several moths...and your Windows install is less than a week old...I would think that clearly points to some hardware problem that I would expect to be decidedly better analyzed hands on.  But let's see what we can see.

Hard drive SMART data looks OK, no evidence of any drive overheating.  No evidence of CPU overheating.  No evidence of Windows partition space constraints.

You have a valid license for Win 7 Pro and an installation DVD?

Louis,

Thank you for the response. The problem is months old....yes....a few days ago I did a Windows repair by following instructions I found somewhere in the Microsoft forums. That's why the install looks only a week old. By the way....the repair didn't help at all. My PC froze at least 3 time already today.  Yes..I have a valid license for Windows 7 Pro and installation DVD.

OK, this is what I would do.

a.  Delete current installed C: partition, after moving any valued data from C: partition to one of the other drives.  That should be easy, IMO.

b.  Run hard drive diagnostic on the drive used as your Windows drive.

c.  Clean install Windows.  I don't see that much would have been gained by doing a repair install...and a clean install gives you the basis for more accurate troubleshooting of any issues that emerge.

d.  Run Memtest86+ on each RAM module separately and in various combinations...that should help eliminate RAM from suspicion.

After each of the above, you check to see if there has been a recurrence of problems.

I don't have any answers for your situation, so I'm going to move this to Internal Hardware since I don't think there are Win 7 issues here but something else.

Thanks Louis. I ran Memtest86+ already and the RAM was perfect. I have some serious software on the C drive. I was hoping to avoid clean installing Windows 7. What exactly do you mean when you say " Delete current installed C: partition"?

Do you by any chance know what your CPU and memory use are like when it does this?  It could be difficult to get to the bottom of the problem.  But as a start maybe keep a resource monitor window open while using the computer, and when it goes into this 'not responding' mode try to observe if any processes are using large amounts of memory or CPU time.  It may be that an application is corrupted and is locking up the computer temporarily.

I would also suggest verifying that all your system files are OK by opening an elevated command prompt (type cmd.exe into the start box, and right click and choose "run as administrator") and running the command sfc /scannow  - they should be fine as you've just done a repair install, but this will verify them.

Also if you haven't done so recently, a full check of each of the disks using chkdsk /r c: (repeat for each drive letter) again in an elevated command prompt. Be aware these checks take some time to complete, so they are best done when they don't need to use the computer for a while.

There might be other approaches worth trying such as using msconfig to perform a minimal start up (diagnostic start up) which loads Windows with basic drivers and services only.  If the problem stops, then it narrows down the search to items that are loading up at start up...

Another possibility could be an attached device could be acting up, like a printer or external HDD.  Try it with minimal extra components attached and see if it improves.

Thanks very much for the advice and info. The CPU shows 0% in the task manager when the PC freezes up. RAM is anywhere from 1% to 4%. I have done chkdsk and all is well there. I did the ]sfc /scannow thing and no problems were noted. The printer is connected but I rarely turn it on. I do have one external HD connected. I could unhook that and see what happens.

I'm not sure that 1% to 4% overall memory use is likely TBH.  The Speccy snapshot shows usage as 28% at that point in time which is perfectly normal. 1% to 4% available memory would of course be a problem, as this would cause the system to slow to a crawl as it would be making very heavy use of the page file.  Does your system show heavy disk activity during these periods when it's not responding?  Is the HDD light going continuously, for example?  I had an issue like that myself recently due to some mystery memory usage increasing over time, which I believe was linked to a network driver..

Anyway if none of what's suggested so far yields any improvement then something else I would look at is Norton anti virus.  It's not unknown for this to cause slow downs as a quick internet search will show.  I see N360.exe (which is a Norton component) involved in one application error in your Minitoolbox report.  Possibly a complete removal using the removal tool (which should remove all files and settings related to the program), verifying whether that fixes the problem, and then re-installing afresh will be worth doing.

I just took a wild guess saying 1 to 4% of RAM use. When I use Photoshop RAM use goes up to well over 60%. Let's put it this way....RAM use doesn't spike when the PC freezes.....according to the task manager. I tested the RAM every which way. Passed all the tests with no problems. I have uninstalled Norton in the past. Same behavior was present. I didn't use the removal tool however. I'll try that.

Edit.....you asked about heavy disk activity during those times. There isn't. HD light doesn't flash any more or less than when the PC is running smoothly.

Update: OK...I just unistalled Norton and installed the free Bitdefender AV. Lets see what happens.

OK....I uninstalled Norton AV and installed minimalist lightweight AV Bitdefender. I thought the PC freeze/not responding problem was gone and I was ready to throw a parade and celebrate.....but.....after several hours of use....where everything was freeze free and silky smooth.....the PC froze again crushing my ecstatic mood. This time the freeze/not responding episode felt different. It lasted longer.....more than 4 solid minutes.....and the screen had a opaque white appearance where I could see the screen but it had that milky white haze over the top. Curser also froze for a time then unfroze......but......now I'm back to square one.

Please advise.......this thing is killing me.

Thank you.....

Worth reading, IMO

To be honest...the variety of errors would make me initiate a post in Am I Infected, to rule it out (at the least).  It's hard to look at those and say that any one program or even several programs are causing your problems.

I would also test my RAM thoroughly, not because I can pinpoint it as problematical...but because it's one more item I can eliminate from the suspects.

Thanks very much Louis. I passed Memtest86 with flying colors so my RAM is OK....at least according to that test. Malwarebytes, Norton AV, Bitdefender, Avast all say I am not infected. I'll read the link you posted and see if it helps.

<<Malwarebytes, Norton AV, Bitdefender, Avast all say I am not infected. I'll read the link you posted and see if it helps.>>

That means absolutely nothing, IMO...if those applications were capable of detecting and neutralizing every type of malware that exists...then that would be the standard "solution" posted by those skilled in neutralizing malware...and there would be no need of special tools which are used to analyze/neutralize malware.  I know that some would like to believe that a non-detection by Malwarebytes is equal to a "there is no malware" declaration...it just isn't so.
