XP Home SP3, AVG Free version, Dell Latitude D420 laptop.  Firefox updated, said it wanted to restart, but didn't restart as the software said it would do. Restart attempt gets BSOD with BAD_POOL_CALLER error  Laptop will boot in safe mode but not able to delete Firefox.  I tried to use system recovery to go back to a safe restart, but still same error on a normal restart attempt.  Please help.

Hi myrmyd. If the problem came after a Firefox installation failure, try Last Known Good Configuration or System Restore or see this link.

Thank you very much for your reply.  I had tried Last Known Good Configuration before posting here, but I tried it again.   Still goes to the same Bad Pool Caller on BYOD.  I had unsuccessfully tried a couple System Restore dates before posting here, but I tried a couple more further back.  The computer goes through the System Restore process and tries to reboot, but gets the same BYOD as before.  On the second System Restore I tried, I noticed there was a message on the System Restore sceen that the computer had been successfully restored to the first date attempted tonight, but I disagree with "successfully" since it resulted in a BYOD.  The second date (earlier than the first attempt) had the same result - went through the process of System Restore, continued to try to restart, and ended in the same BYOD Bad Pool Caller.

Laptop will boot in safe mode but not able to delete Firefox

What error messages do you see when using Add or Remove Programs? When you say updated Firefox and restarts, is it a browser restart only then started to BSOD on reboot?

First thing that happened - computer booted normally - Firefox wanted to update, went with that update, and then Firefox wanted to restart the computer, clicked ok on that, and that restart instigated by Firefox resulted in the first BSOD.

Since I couldn't boot normally, I booted in safe mode as the administrator, went to control panel, add/remove programs, and tried to uninstall Firefox 28.0 (x86 en-US).  Nothing at all happens when I click on Remove other than the blue streak that shows I selected Mozilla Firefox flashes once.  Click - flash - no uninstall menu.  No other little screen, no uninstall happens, nothing.  When I then try to delete other programs in safe mode, I get a message that says this cannot be done because the "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.  This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."  I do NOT get that message when I try to remove Firefox -- I get no reaction at all from the computer other than the blue streak flashes once.

After that, I tried the System Restore and last good configuration fixes, and then retried those at your suggestion.  All normal restart attempts result in Bad Pool Caller BSOD.

Thank you so much for replying.

Try this in safemode https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=2123 referring to the error message.

jhayz - I clicked on this page and followed instructions to select RUN and type in cmd.  I got a window with this line in it:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.CYCJKF1.001> with a cursor.

I typed in msiexec /unregister and pressed enter, and the very same line C:\Documents( and so on)  appeared with a cursor at the end.  I then typed in msiexec /regserver and pressed enter.  The exact same line C:\Documents (and so on) appeared for the third time with a blinking cursor at the end.  The instructions then said to close the command prompt and try to install software.  Shouldn't the msiexec commands have shown something on the screen?

I went to control panel, add/remove, and tried to remove programs with these results:

Mozilla Firefox - the blue stripe showing Firefox selected just flashed, no messages, other windows, or anything to work with.

Monster Mash - error message "could not open install.log file"

MTV Toolbar - I got a window asking me to confirm that I wanted to remove, I said yes, then got the error message about Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed.

AVG: Message that Safe Mode was detected and a long message about trying to run the AVG 2014 Installer in safe mode, etc. I cancelled out of that process although I wonder if AVG is part of the problem.

I get a different result depending on what I try to remove, but the bottom line is that nothing at all has been uninstalled.  Thank you for your help.

There is a problem with a windows installer/uninstaller service, based on the error message. The BSOD points to various causes also. Can you go to run and type services.msc (Enter) and look for Windows Installer and see if its running? What is the startup type?

Here's what the services.msc reported:

Windows Installer (skipping description) - blank space under Status where other items say Started.  The Startup Type says : manual

Try removing AVG just in case. Update to the latest version of Malwarebytes and see if it installs correctly also. Remove Mbam by Add or Remove Programs then install the downloaded latest version http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/. If installed successfully, update to the latest definition then run a quick scan. Uncheck the trial Pro version during setup of Mbam. Post of any results next time please.

Just to update also with your SMART value speccy report pertaining to the hard drive. See SMART report

The values in red indicates the number of sectors in bad or unreliable for further system usage. These could very well be the reason why Windows is causing all these BSOD and abnormal behavior. :exclame: Please backup your data externally immediately. If you happen to have a spare hard drive to replace, please do a complete reinstall instead. If you need the product key of your current OS to retrieve, use speccy as installed already and look for the Serial numbers under Operating System category. The numbers are in 25 capital alpha numeric characters.

Very happy news!  In safe mode, I successfully deleted AVG, and the AVG uninstaller asked to reboot to finish the process.  I decided to let the computer attempt to do a normal reboot without F8 and safe mode.  The computer rebooted normally!  I then started MBAM, and it updated to the new version itself without a delete/reinstall, updated its definitions, and ran a scan with zero problems detected.  Windows also did a malicious software detection update and an update on Internet Explorer.  Windows wanted to do a reboot after the updates, and the normal reboot was successful, too.

I plan to make Chrome the default browser and install Avast Free Version.  There is no data on this computer that needs to be backed up.  It's just used for surfing.  Before contacting BleepingComputer, I had run disk cleanup, disk defrag, and chkdsk.  I assume I should repeat those and maybe chkdsk /f this time to avoid all the bad sectors.

Your advice is appreciated.

Run Windows Checkdisk utility instead and tick both boxes. See here for the instructions on how to run and post the results next time.
