in C:\windows\system32 I have found 54 files named  틃叫善;     In windows explorer this file name is displayed as 3 squares followed by a semicolin. They range in size from 93210 kb to 102544 kb. The date modified runs from 9/2/3013 to 11/18/2013. File properties produces no information.

Can you tell me what these files are and can I safely erase them?

What is the file extension reflected?

Are these files within folders in System32?

I have no such files in my System32 folder for XP.

There is no file extension for these files. They are in the system32 folder. I am running XP Home with SP3.

My message was for my desktop Dell 5150. I now noticed that my laptop Dell 6000 has these files also. The laptop has 66 of them, from 9/2/2013 to 11/18/2013, and the file sizes go from 95496 to 103470 On the laptop windows explorer shows the file names as three squares and the number 6,ie, squaresquaresquare6

Have you adjusted your XP settings so that you can see file extensions on files?

IME, there is only one file with no extension...the hosts file.

On all my computers all hidden files and all extensions are set to show. Specifically in the system32 folder all the .acm,.ocx,.exe,.dll, etc show their extensions.

My hosts file is located in    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Although I would simply not ever worry about what's in what folder...since you have gone file-hunting, it's your option.

If you want to delete said files, I suggest you put them in Recycle Bin without emptying it, just in case you decide later that they are of some value.

IME...files that have those characters...are either in a foreign language (I don't install language packs) of otherwise unintelligible by Windows.  If Windows cannot read it, I see no reason to have it on the O/S.
