Hello!

Sometimes when I lock my pc and try logging back on the letters A-Z and 0-9 and others don't work.  But some keys do, such as `,/,* do register and if I press caps lock, it'll still warn me that caps lock is on.  Why is this?

i've yet to find a solution.  the only way I can log in is if I do on screen keyboard or restart computer, and then everything is fine.  And if I do login via on screen keyboard, the keys all work fine again in other apps.  its only with windows where i have to type in pw and not all the time too.

Thanks!

Hi :welcome: to BC,

Make sure you are using the correct keyboard layout on the logon screen in case you have more than one installed

When posting a topic like this it is always a help if you give the make and model of your computer. The reason is that if I - or anybody else  - doesn't recognise the model I can always google it and find out exactly what we are dealing with. So - make and model please !

Is this a standard fold open / shut laptop with a touch screen AND a conventional keyboard ?  It's your reference to an on-screen keyboard that has me confused. Or is it a tablet with only a touch screen?

If it is the former, then you do have two keyboards - the conventional one and the touch screen one. And it sounds like the on-screen one is the one that is active at log-on. If you want to change this then you can probably do it through 'Control panel - Keyboard'.

Hi, yeah it is a standard laptop, not a touch screen.  It is a Lenovo 4700mq i7 I believe.  It came with windows 8, but I had windows 7 disk and installed it and got the drivers from the Lenovo website.  Everything works pretty smoothly besides this small problem.

The on screen keyboard is that little ease of access button on the bottom left that you can press and display on screen keyboard and type login pw with mouse.

i mean, this problem isn't all the time.  Just now I logged in with regular laptop keyboard just fine.  It's soem of the time I can't use A-Z and other keys, but i'm positive it's not the entire laptop keyboard that is disabled.

I just hope it's not some kind of virus/malware.

Hi,

Some laptops have some Fn + Fn key combination to enable the numeric keyboard when this is active the normal keys will type numbers instead of the usual symbol making difficult to enter the correct password.

keyboard.jpg

Note: The image talks about F8 but it could be a different key in your case.

I see.  But the the windows log on doesn't even allow me to type 0-9.  When I type a-z, NOTHING registers.

I think you have one of the Lenovo Y410 / 510 etc series laptops - nice looking laptops. The images on the Lenovo web-site that I looked at are not sufficiently detailed but I don't see any unusual buttons. However, your mention of 'the little ease of access button etc' does mean that you have two keyboards installed on this computer !

I still think your best bet is to go into 'control panel - keyboards' and ensure that your conventional keyboard is set as default.

I have a working knowledge of malware, but i am NOT an expert, but I have never heard of malware that interferes with half a keyboard. At this point I don't think you have to worry about that.

Have a look at control panel.

Hi,

The only suggestion I have for you now is to check the Windows Event Viewer next time the problem happens again, maybe the system records some clue about the problem.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

The WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred.

Hmmm that is very strange.  This computer is quite new, purchased not too long ago.  All I've done to it was replace its Windows 8 with Windows 7.  I don't know how this could happen.  I have dropped it once not too bad though, just slipped from sofa to carpet.

Dropping the computer is all it would take to damage the hdd.
