Hi. My OS is windows vista home edition 32 bit and I use the FireFox browser (31.0).

Occasionally, like once every 30 times, when I start my firefox browser and it goes to my homepage (ighome), a new tab will suddenly popup and go to a page with a download link stating "you are currently using windows vista and your player might be outdated". I just close the window/tab and it is gone.

It appears to be some sort of malware link. The URL in the browsers address field of the tab that opens up starts off with lpmxp2085.com...

I googled this lpmxp2085.com and didn't find much on it.

Anyway so I looked in control panel and also in firefox's addon area and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I also reset FireFox and this did not help.I ran malwarebytes and malwarebytes anti root kit a few times as well as Avast and adwcleaner and they found nothing.

EDIT: I just tried the junkware removal tool JRT for the first time and it did find some registry entries on two computers with this issue (mine and one other) and deleted them. I think it is very likely those entries were the issue. I also ran combo fix and let it do its thing. It seems like it deleted some stuff as well. Anyway I think I am going to say this is Solved as so far the issue has not reoccured. Computer also seems a little faster.

Thanks.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.

  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

By the way, I just saw the tab/popup a minute ago so apparently this thing still exists and JRT did not get rid of it.

I went to my home page, which is provided by ighome.com, and again it popped up in a new tab.

I would have by now suspected my router being infected but I just a few days ago got rid of my router and got a new Verizon router/modem combo. This issue is older than the new modem/router. It's been going on probably about 4-6 weeks.

Oddly, my roommate happened to be running his computer and he saw the pop up a few minutes after I did, right after starting his computer and going to the ighome.com home page. Malwarebytes and other programs show his computer to be malware free just like mine. Is it possible it is coming from Ighome.com somehow ... maybe from an advertisement they place on the homepage? They are considered legit and virus free based on what I have read.

Below is an image of the popup/new tab on my computer:

ESET Online Scanner:

Found no threats.

I've reset FireFox a number of times including about an hour before I got the most recent pop up/tab so that won't help.

I've also ran adwcleaner in the past and this did not help. The temp file cleaner I have never used but I have done something similar with Ccleaner and with FireFox itself in options so I doubt that will help.

That leaves doing a complete FireFox uninstall and clean reinstall using that Mozbackup utility and those instructions as the last option.

I will give this a try shortly and I will let you know in a day or so how it is going as the issue seems to happen every other day or so. So if all is well for a few days it should be good.

Thanks again for all your help Broni.

Well, it's a little early, but I uninstalled FireFox yesterday following the instructions on that page using the Mozzbackup tool and installed a fresh copy of it and so far there have been no more occurences of that tab/popup. Seems like it is gone. Did the same to my friends computer and he no longer is seeing the popup.

As an aside, I noticed that my adobe reader was out of date so I tried to update it by going to the adobe site but it would not update to the latest version - it kept on saying I had the latest version - so I uninstalled it from control panel add/remove and then reinstalled it and it now is showing the latest version.

I also used that delfix program to remove all the tools/logs.

So all seems great now. Thanks so much for all your help!

I have excellent timing. My roommate says he just saw the popup on his computer. He immediately closed it so I didn't get a chance to look at it. I haven't seen it on my computer yet but his computer is the same as mine and I did the same things to his computer so I guess it is a matter of time before I see it again. I guess I'll wait till I actually see it on my computer again but it looks like it might still be around. If it is, I wonder if ighome has something to do with it as we both have that in common and it only happens (occasionally) after starting firefox and going to the ighome home page.

Ok, interesting development. My friend was on his acer mini laptop a few minutes ago which runs windows 8.1 and he just got the popup/tab with the same message/same look except it is for windows 8. He started firefox and went to ighome.com home page and then saw the tab pop up. His laptop is on the same wifi connection as my computer and his other computer that I mentioned earlier. First time we have seen it on this windows 8 computer. The modem/router we have by verizon is new. About 5 days old. This issue though has been going on for a month or so.

We have run the usual stuff on the Acer laptop with windows 8 (Malwarebytes, Avast as antivirus, adwcleaner) and no infection shows.

It looks like this domain, lpmxp2088.com, which is the domain that the latest popup references, was created one week ago, based off a whois search.

Still not seeing it on my computer.

You need to create new topic regarding your friend computer.

As for you...

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

Ok, thanks Broni. Looks like he has some junk on the windows 8 computer. I think I'll try and get rid of it.

If my computer has the issue again I'll revisit this thread.

Thanks again for your help.
