Today, I downloaded a StickyNotes program from cnet. It came with instructions for installing and uninstalling it. For whatever reason (aka, it didn't work or open, really), I decided to uninstall it, and I was instructed to delete the files containing the program- which I supposed was logical, considering it didn't show up in the "uninstall a program" section of the Control Panel. Now though, in the Notification Areas Icon drawer-thing, the program StickyNotes.exe is still running. I can't find where it is on my laptop otherwise. How do I get rid of it?

Windows 7. (I also currently have 2 working StickyNotes programs on my laptop that I wish to keep)

Cnet installs adware with their downloads. You should run the programs below to remove the adware.

You can use Revo uninstaller to remove the program you downloaded and installed.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
  • Run the ESET Online Scanner.
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

I could not find the application to uninstall using Revo uninstaller. The two programs are still in the taskbar drawer.

This is the logfile for JRT. The logfile for Adw Cleaner is nowhere to be found. It opened when the process was finished but it disappeared.

Hmmm....did AdwCleaner find anything? If so, did you click on delete and did it ask you to reboot?

Go ahead with the Eset scan.

download MiniToolBox and run it.
Checkmark following boxes:

  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Restore Points

Click Go and post the result.

Just to add, did you check Task Manager and right-click the exe file - open file location or Properties?

the program StickyNotes.exe is still running

Since it is Windows7....Using a System Restore point prior to installing the program in question, might just take care of that problem.

But I still would like to see the results of those other scans.

Sorry, I haven't had access to my laptop for a couple of days (it was with my brother). AdwCleaner found an old toolbar for Chrome that was there a while ago (it was the conduit thing, but I don't use Chrome so it's never really bothered me).

Here's the log for Eset:

BC Advisor:

The problem is, the program isn't actually listed under processes in Task Manager, the icons just show up in the drawer-thing. =_= (my lack of computer terminology)

So, did Eset online scanner find and remove anything...You mentioned the Eset scan but didn't post any log...it would not

have a log to post if nothing was found.

You should give the System Restore a try. I only see one program....Sticky Notes...I think you want to keep that one.

Use a Restore Point prior to installing the program you want to remove.

System Restore - Microsoft Windows

A bit unusual for Revo not to find what you want to remove. If System Restore doesn't complete the uninstall then you should

check from where you downloaded the program for the correct name of the program. Tell us what the name of the program is

or give a link to the download page.

EDIT: Spent a minute at CNet....there is one program there named Stickies....bad reviews...complaints such as can't completely

uninstall....impossible to figure out how to use...installs an unwanted toolbar and changes to Bing Search from Google.

Suggest doing a search for Stickies on your computer. Send whatever files you find for Stickies to the Recycle Bin.

Another thought what happens when you right click on the desktop Icon for Stickies? Do you see the option to delete the Icon?

Oh sorry, I posted the wrong thing, but I just checked again and the two icons were gone, so I suppose it's fixed(?) Thanks.
