Everytime i start my laptop i get a black screen saying windows did not start succesfully. And it gives me some options, safe mode with command, safe mode with prompt, safe mode, last known good configuration, and start windows normally. When i pick start normally it comes on with no problem,im just worried as to why im getting this black screen every time i boot up.

Look in System Restore and see if you have a restore point from before the anomaly began.

If you do, use it.

No,ive not got a restore point that goes that far back. Its because i had a virus,so i turned it off and then back on.Ive got mru blaster, ccleaner, and atf cleaner for cleaning temp files and other stuff.I just cant think what might be causing it.Have you any ideas?

What brand and model is the computer?

Some of the major brands have a restore partition from which you can either make a set of restore cds or restore the computers operating system to the condition it was in when new.

It's a Portege 3480CT

Came with W98 or W2000Pro

What op system are you using? If it's XP it was upgraded to XP or had a fresh XP install done.

If you bought it from a commercial venue they may be able to provide an XP install CD.

I suggest you get the Windows Key code while the system is working.

Go to Magicaljellybean and download the Keyfinder 1.41 freeware ap which will tell you the key number.
