Hi,

I'm trying to run AdwCleaner v3301 on an XP pro machine and getting the error "Variable used without being declared."

Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

IMO, it's a scripting code error...possibly malicious code already on your system.  Moved to Am I Infected for a look.

Thanks for taking time to reply, Louis. I'm not sure what your reply means. Is there something quarantined on my system that I need to look at?

After running AdwCleaner, I found an AdwCleaner quarantine directory, but it's empty.

Thank you for your attention to this.

-I downloaded AdwCleaner from the Bleeping Computer website.

-I started AdwCleaner immediately after a reboot.

-Line 2132 C:\Program Files\AdwCleaner.exe

Error Variable used without being declared.

I'm running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v 1.7.5 right now. It has found an object early in the run. It won't be done scanning for half-an-hour, and I have to go out. I will post the results of the A-M scan when I return.

The error shows up either at the very end of scanning files or the very beginning of scanning tasks.

Thanks, we will try to send the information to Xplode the AdwCleaner developer.

Can you tell us what Malwarebytes Anti-Malware reported?

MBA-M reported one adware agent. It was successfully removed. I retried AdwCleaner after a reboot and received the same error as before.

Happening on another XP machine. Might be an XP-related error. Will try a few more.

Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Advanced, v 8.

The same error is showing on four out of five XP/Pro/SP3 machines, all with the above Trend AV. In addition, on multiple Thinkpad T61 laptops (XP/Pro/SP3), it's showing a false positive for IBM KCU, which is a Thinkpad keyboard-adaption service.

Just confirmed the error when running the tool on a Windows XP VM, the first time I use a real machine running XP and didn't got any error.

Already sent the extra data to the developer...
