Hello,

computer: Lenovo G500 laptop

connection: Wireless

router: Not sure, I think it's a Linksys

location: Same room

internet type: Irrelevant

Since having a malware infection that I think has been cleaned I cannot connect to a certain AP that I used to be able to. I can connect to all other APs that I should be able to.

The AP in question is at a cafe and all the other users have no trouble, in fact I can connect to it with my other devices. I also tried my

USB wireless adapter on this laptop with the same failure result.

Windows 8.1 says "connecting" for a while and then "not connected". Tried reinstalling wireless driver, flushing DNS, reinstalling TCP/IP stack. No go. Mystery? Thank you!

1D10T, Welcome to BC Forums! :)

No, not that, it's just that networking issues can be tricky to identify, especially when all was working fine & an infection throws things out of whack, as was the intent of the malware distributor. The fact that two separate wireless devices cannot connect is further evidence something isn't right.

Am going to see what assistance I can find for you.

When you re-installed the wireless driver, did you first remove it? You can remove the wireless driver from device manager listed under network adapters, right click on the device you wish to uninstall and click uninstall. When you uninstall DO NOT select delete the driver, just uninstall, restart and it should automatically re-install.

This will delete all of your memorized networks so you will need to re-enter the passwords to connect to your networks.

Yes, I did remove the driver first. After that didn't work, I tried the "delete" option as well with similar results.

My next step would be to boot to a linux distro (etiher usb or disc), and try to connect using that rather than windows. It would seem somehow the computer is being blocked on that particular AP if others worked fine.

I prefer linux mint myself but any distro should work. You can get linux mint here: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

Download it and burn it to a disc or create a bootable usb device.

You may have to change a setting in your bios for legacy boot to work.

Does uTorrent run as a Startup service every time the computer boots? Having this software can be seen as an open door to malware infections, more or less an invitation. That's due to the way the service works. P2P, or computer to computer network, all it takes is one sick computer in the chain to infect all, which can easily be hundreds. Similar to catching the flu in a high traffic public place. One person makes everyone sick.

If this Topic ends up in the "Am I Infected" forum, whomever assists you will ask that it be uninstalled (at least long enough to diagnose & disinfect) & will verify that it is, during any system tests. The test results will show it as being installed & it'll be up to the assistant to continue to help or move to someone else.

It could also be that whomever's site you're trying to connect to doesn't allow this type of software to be running while on the network (their Firewall blocking access to the opening of the needed uTorrent port). By default, these Torrent clients install themselves as a Startup service, the user may or may not know this, however it has to be manually disabled not to run at Startup. At any rate, there's an issue within your computer that's preventing connection, being that you've attempted to connect with two separate adapters.

zingo156's advice would be a good thing to try, that is, if you just want to connect to this site & disregard the issue that's preventing connection. I've ran Linux MInt for over 5 years now, drivers for most wireless adapters is included with the OS. And whatever is wrong with your Windows install won't affect other customers on the network. However if you fire up the built in Torrent client, the same thing may happen, so you may want to forget that on this AP.

However if it were me, I'd want to know what's wrong with my computer. Because as far as making any transactions goes, regardless of whom's site it happens to be, your financial data may be at risk. Which would be a far more pressing issue over what AP one can connect to.

Hello,

Here are a couple ideas from some other folks here.

You stated that there had been an infection on the computer.  It is possible that you had that infection while connected at that particular location and that the computer has been blacklisted.  Have you checked the Internet Cafe owner if he/she blacklists?

Have you tried connecting with another external adapter to see if that works?

Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

I wasn't able to connect to the network using the Linux Mint disc, also it didn't detect my other Wifi adapter so I was only able to try the on-board adapter. Thanks, it was worth trying.

The uTorrent does NOT run automatically at startup, it's only used as-needed.

I did try a third external adapter with the same unsuccessful results. I'm leaning towards a Windows/Antivirus/firewall mismanagement of wireless network access

That could be a possibility, however the one time you were able to gain Internet access with the Linux Mint live media, your Windows security & firewall options were bypassed, meaning these weren't a factor. So it could be possible that your on-board adapter is totally blocked.

Anyone with a website, even a home one, can block select MAC addresses with the router software.

What I don't know is, if there are advanced routers that can detect other components, other than the MAC address of the wireless router. Such as a hardware hash of a computer. Every computer has this, known as the GUID.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

I wasn't able to connect to the network using the Linux Mint disc, also it didn't detect my other Wifi adapter so I was only able to try the on-board adapter. Thanks, it was worth trying.

This is pretty solid evidence of your computer being black listed by who ever controls the access point. We can firmly rule out a operating system problem by using linux if the issue remains the same with both OS's. The next step would be to speak with the person that controls the wireless access point.

Quick question: are you doing anything to change ipv4 settings? As in are you setting a static ip? Make sure you use DHCP to connect. If you are not sure of what these settings are, you are likely using DHCP so ignore these questions.

If I am helping you with a problem and I have not responded within 48 hours please send me a PM.

Thanks everyone for your input, all were ideas worth trying! The solution turned out to be re-installing AVG and uninstalling using their uninstall tool *not the built-in uninstaller*. Looks like the Internet security "feature" was blocking this one particular AP, from which I'm posting now!

Thanks again  :)
