Posted 23 July 2014 - 09:57 AM

I'm getting a variety of pop ups and errors on both Chrome and Firefox that my free Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials are not able to remove.

Among the pop ups are requests to update a media player that sometimes redirect to requests to update drivers which open new tabs seemingly randomly.

New tabs open for a site called playnow, which also pops up a box that says "updates recommended."

There was a popup for mypcbackup and adfocus

If someone can help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

I hadn't seen another popup in a few days, but then one appeared again, just before running the programs you recommended.

I ran the programs and have included the logs here.

I'll watch for a few days and see if anything pops up again and post an update.

Thank you again for your help.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Latest version is Java JRE 7u65.

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 55
Java SE Development Kit 7 Update 7

===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

If you get any other popups reset these:

Click the StartBtn.gif button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, double-click Command Prompt.

at the cursor type:
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (A space between g and / is needed)

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then hit Enter, type Exit, hit the Enter key.

You may need to run CMD - Command Prompt on Vista - Windows 7/8 with Elevated Privilege

If that fails to remove the Redirects try this.

Reset all you Browsers.

Reset Chrome...
Click on "Customize and control Google Chrome":

Thank you for all your help.

I updated Java and Adobe Reader (those two seem to be out of date every few days).

I did ipconfig flush and renew.

I reset the settings for all three browsers.

Unfortunately, I am still getting popups.

I have attached some pictures of the types of popups I am seeing.

Thank you for helping. This problem really has me stumped. I cannot express how appreciative I am of your help.

I deleted my browser temp files.
I deleted the Java Cache.
And I deleted the flash cache as per this link: https://forums.adobe.com/message/4278569

Unfortunately, I am still getting similar pop ups. I can't attach any more pictures to these posts, it seems, so I'll link some pictures asap.

I think these popups are comming from this Microsoft Media player.
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe

Read about it.

http://www.groovypost.com/howto/groovytip/what-is-wmpnetwk-exe-virusand-is-it-running/

Disable it and restart and click the Apply button.

Restart the computer normally.

If the popups have stopped the you should update the application if you need it.

Keep me posted.

Thank you for bearing with me.

I disabled the Windows Network Sharing service, as suggested (though it was set to start manually, so I'm not sure if it was starting up at all) and restarted my computer.

http://imgur.com/BqDa7Wf

Unfortunately, I'm still getting errors that are telling me to update my media player.

http://imgur.com/JcWoVKM

I thought that there *might* be a possibility that I legitimately needed to update some media player, but if that were the case I wouldn't be getting the adfoc.us and playnow popups, too. So I haven't clicked on any of the messages that have popped up saying my media player needs to be updated.

I don't have any extensions that are specific to 'linkbucks' and I don't really have any extensions that seem particularly suspicious to me (though I'm working on getting rid of the java and unity plugins that are giving me warnings).

http://imgur.com/gHmEeKF

http://imgur.com/4dUzwe7

I could potentially block the popups as you described, or just using adblock plus might block them, but if I legitimately have malware somewhere on this computer, I'd rather get rid of it, if possible, rather than covering it up. I can't imagine that this problem is not caused by malware, given that I worked on this computer for years before I started having this problem just recently.

EDIT:

Ok, the java and unity plugins that were giving me warnings are gone.

http://imgur.com/BRvk1nG

I'll report back if there are any more popups.

EDIT 2:

Still getting messages that look like this:

Since we were having so much trouble with this problem, I was considering reformatting the computer. I decided that if I was going to reformat anyway, I would follow some of the clearly malware links to see if I could find any more clues.

I was redirected to several different suspicious computer repair / registry cleaner software downloads, but one time I was redirected to a site with the letters "lpmxp" in it.

Upon Googling that phrase, I came across a forum post that says:

For the past few weeks, on any browser I'm running - IE 11 or Chrome, I'm getting constant re-directs when I click on links - whether they're web forums, Yahoo pages, Google results - anything...

I get a new tab telling me I have to update Win 7 drivers, or I have to update my media player.  I tried to install a blocker and lots of these came from *.dollfield.eu and lpmxp***.com (where *** is a number), downloadfilesaver.com or downloadju.com - and I get an automatic download of a file - usually Player-Chrome.exe or another that has to do with Flas forced into my Downloads directory.

....

Firing up an old PC that's been dormant for over a year, it also had the problems.  Examining the source of pages to see how their links were made found nothing out of the ordinary.  But seeing the behavior of Chrome (and brief flashes of bogus website addresses in the new tabs before the ads loaded) got me thinking.

DNS

I logged into my router and looked at the DNS settings and they didn't look right.  I thought they were supposed to be x.y.z.a and x.y.z.a+1 for primary and secondary.  Instead, the primary started with 194 and the secondary with 66 (if memory serves).

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/multi-browser-adware-infection-not-found-by/6a7cdf52-96a3-4ed4-8bf8-6bd5879234dc

With that in mind, I turned the adblocker off another computer in the house and found that computer was having the same problems.

After that, I logged into the router and checked the DNS settings.

Sure enough, there were three IPs listed, which I Googled and found one to belong to my ISP, and the other two (107.170.245.37, and 107.170.168.61) that when Googled, brought me to this article:

Static DNS 1:     107.170.168.61

Static DNS 2:     107.170.245.37

Static DNS 1 and DNS 2 are malicious.

So I cleared those IPs from the DNS settings, restarted the router, and reset the browser settings for all the browsers on the two computers.

It's been two days and so far I haven't seen another popup on either computer.

I'm keeping an eye on the router settings, so if everything seems clear for a few more days, I'll consider the problem solved :D
