Poor performance, New CPU, Windows 8

Hey everybody,

 

A family member brought me their laptop, complaining that is was running slow. It is an HP with Windows 8 that has not been used very much. It is definitely running slow; in both internet and non-internet functions.

 

I ran a scan with MBAM and found nothing.

 

This is my first experience with Windows 8. I checked the task manager, looking for clues, everything seemed normal to me. Usually I would suspect some sort of malware, but I don't see a trace. 

 

Does anyone else know of an issue like this? Is it possible that there is no malware and something is just not set up correctly? Are there any other scans I should try?

 

Any help is greatly appreciated.

turn off all unwanted process and start up programs  plus goto power options and select power mode to performance mode!

 

use cc cleaner  to top it off

Please download AdwCleaner and run it.
 
An image like the one below will open, click on Scan.

Once the search is complete a list of the pending items will be displayed.  If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.  
 
Click on Clean to remove the selected items.  If you have any questions about any items in the list please copy and paste the list in your topic so we can review it.  
 
You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be close so that the infections can be removed.  Click on Ok.
 
When the cleaning process is complete a log of what was removed will be presented.  Please copy and the paste this log in your next post.

Since all your scans come up clean, I think you need to look at what Windows is running in the background. If the computer is seldom turned on Win8 will always run a full scan with defender and also disk analyze and of course windows updates. 

 

My old win7 laptop was like this when I upgraded to  Win8. 

 

I don't have a win8 image near by right now, but look up how to turn off scheduled scans on windows 8.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.
 
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
 
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

What is the model of this notebook?
 
There is nothing in the Speccy which looks like a problem.
 
The temperatures look good, there is lots of free space on the hdd with no S.M.A.R.T. attributes to be concerned about.
 
The only thing I would change would be to add another matching 4GB RAM module, this will make an appreciable improvement in performance.
 
You posted that you had run a scan with Malwarebytes, was the new version 2.0?
 
Please copy and  paste the log in your topic.
 
To find your Malwarebytes log,download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.
 
To open the log double click on mbam-check.exe on your desktop.  When the log opens, scroll down toward the bottom of the log to Quarantined Items.  Copy and paste this in your next post.
 
I would like to have you run one other scan.

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.

I ran the ESET scanner. It got hung up at about 33% on Wild Tangent games. I stopped the scan, deleted Wild Tangent, and started it again. It ran for 8 hours and 11 minutes and found no threats. I didn't see any way to get the log for the scan, but i just realized that I ran it through Chrome instead of IE. I don't know if this matters, but I'm running it again with IE for good measure.
 
I was thinking that the ESET scan usually doesn't take very long, especially with a computer with such little use.
 
Thanks again for the help. I'm truly stumped.
 
I'll post the ESET log whenever it finishes.

The section of the log I'm interested is what is in the quarantine portion.  This should be located near the end of the log.

i think it is antivirus problem you are using trial version or licenced anti-virus software can plz tell me if you still have problem

If you read the Speccy snapshot you would find that they are running Avast, it is up to date as well.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Not sure what to try next. I updated to Windows 8.1, this did not help. I'm truly stuck. Is it possible that the machine is just defective?

Honestly, I think it's probably the specification of the laptop itself that is not helping.  The AMD E300 processor is slow, in a similar class to Intel Atom processors.  The review here comments on the slowness of the computer (also check the comments underneath the review).  You might be able to improve matters by disabling as many features and start up programs as possible.  There's some tips here for adjustments you can make to Windows 8 for slower hardware.  Alternatively you might have better luck using a lightweight Linux distro rather than Windows on this machine.
