I am experiencing an issue which for me is impossible to cure.  Almost every time i try to enter a site, a 'Server Not Found' box appears asking me to try again. After one or two attempts i usually manage to enter the site but often it take many before i finally get in.  A few sites don't seem to be a problem, but the majority are..

I have a 7 year old HP Presario laptop, which works well apart from this one major problem. I do pride myself in keeping a 'clean' computer. I have Avast, Malwarebytes, Ccleaner which is used daily and Auslogics defragger which is used about once a week, and after any major updates or whatever. I also have Superantispyware.

The original Vista was put back into my laptop after a few months running a fake Windows 7! This had been put in by a 'well meaning'  comp technician, thinking it would improve the laptop's performance. I must add that this 'Server Not Found' was creating the same problem with the Windows.

I have tried everything i can think of to cure this, but i am no expert with comps so there has been no improvement. I mainly use Firefox, but have tried Chrome which suffers the same defect

I feel sure there is a cure, and that someone on here will know exactly what to do!. Please help me before i go barmy with this thing LOL.  I shall be most grateful i can assure you!.

Thanking you..

Try to ping domain name of the websites you are trying to use.  Also, ping some of the better known search tools, like google.com

Press the Windows and X keys at the same time, then click on Command Prompt (Admin).

When the Command Prompt opens type in ping, make one space then type in the domain name you want to ping and press Enter.  Example: pring google.com

Please make a couple of screen shots of the results and post these in your topic.

1. Download and run A Thousand Words .

2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot

3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.

4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.

You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.

Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options

Post2_zpsf05c0430.png

When you click on More Relpy Options  you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you made with the, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.

Thank you. Unfortunately i have not been able to take a screen shot of the Pings. The 1000 Words takes me to step 2 of 3 and no further. (maybe i am doing something wrong or not seeing the wood for the trees) When trying to take screen shot with the Prnt Sc and Ctrl keys etc nothing comes when i get to putting on Paint (ctrl/V).

When i pinged Google 4 times there was a 25% loss three times and finally no loss  Pinged www.Betfair.com. It 'timed out' 4 times.

Pinged Lloyds bank.co.uk General failure then 3 times ok. Pinged Tennisinsight.com 4 times ok. Pinged www.soccervist.com 4 times ok. www.tennisprediction.com. Could not find (address correct).

These may or may not be of use to you, but they were taken at a time od day when my int conecction is always at its best.

Regards JH

Could it be a DNS problem?

Had some time to test but the underlying problem is still there. There has been an improvement in that it seems to do everything quicker, which is good, and it takes fewer attempts to connect to the sites. I wish i could pinpoint the sites which were always a problem but is not like that. You can never tell which it is going to be!

I am sure the above log will tell you a few things by the look of it!  Thank you and regards.

You ran chkdsk, which I did not request, and didn't use a switch which would produce results, like chkdsk /r

Did you run the Windows Repair (all in one)?

Yes i did. Sorry i did a couple of things i shouldn't do, how naughty of me!  You are dealing with someone who is not a sophisticated computer user. While the instructions that were given are clear enough, once you have sorted the wood from the trees, a lot is going on to distract one. Like constantly having to reboot etc. Anyway, those are my excuses LOL!

I think your idea of a possible DNS [problem is a good one. You can try adding the OpenDNS server addresses to your computer. Be sure to write down any DNS server address if it is using one now instead of obtaining it automatically. See how it goes. If it doesn't work, change it back to what it was before. Other than that, continue to follow dc3's excellent advice.

Edit: Sorry, I gave the link to Windows 7, Here is the one for Vista

Thank you JohnC i will try that.  Incidentally i ran that programme again which was suggested by dc3. I also made sure i followed the instructions to the letter!. The testing went off without a hitch but the end result has been the same....no improvement. I have noticed though, that the closing down and booting of my comp has been much slower.

I will report back when i have some news,  Thanks again.

Your Welcome. Glad it worked out for you. Thanks for the update.

Edit. If you have more than one computer on the network, it may be more desirable to put the DNS address on the router itself and set the computers to obtain the DNS automatically.
