Every so often, Windows Defender (Windows 8.1) hounds me to update. It 'updates' for hours and never finishes. What's the deal with this?

Hi,

Defender needs to update regularly - like at least weekly. When you let it go too long it almost has to reinstall itself completely, a task it may not be designed to do well.

Take the easy way out - update weekly, or more often. Updates are available daily from MS.

Real-time protection is On and it's set to automatically update, but every few weeks "Your virus and spyware definitions haven't been updated lately. You should upate them now..." So, this is weird.

You might want to check for malware with Malwarebytes and your antivirus program.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

Take a look at when you have software to do its automatic updates. Possibly when the system is shut down?
