Hi

Recently I was sent a credit card error via email, which contain a zip file, it looked a bit suspecious so furthe investigation showed it contained a virus. I deleted it as per instuctions via bulldog.

When I retured to my user area a couple of days ago it, the computer was running very very slow. I restarted to find all my documents and pictures deleted.

I back up on a regular basis so I can restore.

I am running windows xp pro.

What i would like to konw have I been infected by this file?, or anthor? or was this a problem with windows?

I have included this HJT logfile it may help.

Can you help in any way to reslove this phenomenon?

Thanks
Darren

C:winows/system32.ntoskrnl.exe

I suppose that's a typo? It should be Windows.

ntoskrnl.exe is a critical process in the boot-up cycle of your computer. Some changes are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected.

Let's do an online virus scan to be sure:

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Everything looks fine. No sign of any malware. Do you still think that your system is not running as it should?

Let's do some house cleaning first and then run another online scan.

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for " Temporary Internet Files
" Downloaded Program Files
" Recycle Bin
" Temporary Files

Click OK or Enter

====================================

Please download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
Post the DrWeb-log please.

===================================
  • Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop

Hi,

Sorry for delay, but second scan took a long, long time (5.5hrs), but here are results;-

From dr.web

A0003749.dll;C:\System Volume Information\_restore{AD5B1CAA-9CC9-43AE-A72F-87D698BB7467}\RP5;Trojan.PWS.Tanspy;Deleted.;

From winPFind

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Thanks for the logs. I am going to check your WinPFind log tonight. It requires some quality time. In the mean time please do the following:

I don't know how I missed this but you don't seem to have any antivirus. :thumbsup:
Download one of these free anti-virus programs RIGHT NOW, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Grisoft AVG from here : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 <==== I use this one myself.
AntiVir Free from here : http://www.free-av.com/
Avast Home Edition from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

=========================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it

=========================================

Download and install Ewido Antimalware 4.0 .
  • Open Ewido AntiMalware
  • Go to Status menu
  • Click change status on Resident shield to inactive Under "Your computers Security"
Update but Do not scan with it yet.

=========================================

Make sure that you can see hidden files
" Click Start
" Open My Computer
" Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
" Select the View Tab
" Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
" Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
" Click Yes to confirm
" Click OK
=========================================
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath:

C:\WINDOWS\ifcnw.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

=========================================

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below.
a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

=========================================

When you are in Safe Mode, Using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore) navigate to and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\ifcnw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6mons.dll

=========================================

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected.
  • Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user

=========================================

From Safe Mode Run Ewido AntiMalware
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine
  • Then click Apply all actions
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop
NOTE: Ewido scan may need an hour.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel

=========================================
Reboot in Normal Mode
=========================================
Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php

The newest version of Ad-aware SE is 1.06 and Spybot 1.4. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be remove

Post back the results of the Ewido and a fresh HijackThis log please.

I am not familiar with Bulldog. It's not a widely known antivirus. Did you pay for the subscription? This is what Sunbelt says about it:
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threa...;threatid=26018
Judging by the statements in Add.Description section, I am sure you'd have better alternatives. I'll be waiting for the scan results.

P.S. The reason the WinPFind took so long is because you have a very large dump file. When your computer stops unexpectedly as a result of a Stop error (also known as a "blue screen of death", system crash, or bug check), a Memory.dmp file is automatically created and it is helpful when diagnosing problems using debugging tools, which is mostly used by Microsoft Engineers. If you want scans to take less time, you can either disable the dump file creation or delete the dump file.

To disable dump file creation: Open the System folder in Control Panel, Click on the Advanced tab and then Click on the Settings button under Startup and Recovery option.
Under Write debugging information, Click to open the drop down menu and select none and OK your way out.

Note: Disabling the dump file creation does delete the dump file created on earlier occasions.

To delete it, use Windows explorer and browse to the default location, C:\Windows and delete the Memory.dmp file. You can always copy it to a disk before you delete it in case you want to have a record of it.

I have paid for a year licence on Bullguard, the reason for this is that others have said its is ok, but will use another when this runs out.

VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

Hi electron4,

Other than these two files, ifcnw.exe which I couldn't find any information on, and ipv6mons.dll, which was a bad browser helper object though not present in your log but showed up in WinPFind only, scans were all clean. The latter one probably wasn't active, as it didn't show up in the log, but I am going to include a registry fix below for any remnants, just in case.

And for C:winows/system32.ntoskrnl.exe: when I scan, my antivirus reports this file as changed too. As I said, that's normal. None of the scans (Kaspersky, Dr.Web, WinPFind, Ewido) showed it as infected.

It's always a good idea to back up the registry before making any changes to it. If everything is OK after a few days, and you do not wish to keep the registry backup file so that it will not be reactivated accidentally, you can delete it.

At the taskbar, click Start>Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.
Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Open notepad. It must be notepad, not wordpad.
Copy and paste the text inside the code box below into notepad, including the blank line at the end. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off in notepad - click the format menu and uncheck wordwrap.
Choose file save as and set file type to all files.
Type fixreg.reg in the file name and save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY-LOCAL_ MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{73364D99-1240-4dff-B11A-67E448373048}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\{73364D99-1240-4dff-B11A-67E448373048}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Close notepad. Make sure that all windows are closed.

Find the fixreg.reg file on your desktop.
Double click it.
It will then ask if you want the file merged to your registry.
Answer yes.

Reboot your computer.

You should be all set to go. You can go ahead and remove/delete everything I asked you to download, except Ewido and Ccleaner. They are useful tools to have around. When the trial period is over, you'll need to update Ewido manually before scanning.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on: Do this only ONCE, not on a regular basis.

Remember to hide your system files:

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View

Under the Hidden files and Folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
check the Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK.
