Can't connect to the internet

Hi I'm new to this forum.  I have an HP Pavillion with Windows 8.  My computer turns on and everything works fine but I can not connect to the internet anymore.  I recently (within the past 2 weeks) got AVG for my computer because I was having trouble logging on to my work email. I only have the free trial version. Then I couldn't use IE or Firefox, but Google was working fine.  Then I couldn't use Google anymore either. I tried to roll my computer back to an earlier date but every time I try it fails to do it.  I don't know how to fix this issue so I can connect to the internet again.  Maybe I have a virus?  Any suggestions, ideas?
