I need help with a win7 pc running sfc /scannow to fix an issue with blank screen for "turn windows features off or on". I did some researching and found that sfc /scannow would be the solution. After running sfc /scannow I get the error of "windows found corrupt files and could not finish" error. I attached the cbs.log according to research that this will assist the helper to this ticket. Hopefully I can get this fixed.

Seems as though you need to boot from the Windows install media applicable to your version of Windows and run sfc /scannow from repair options > command prompt.

The attachment didn't make it.  What were the names of the files that didn't get corrected?

I like bludgard's advice, but in case you don't have an install disc, you can still make a repair disc on another Windows 7 computer by clicking Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create System Repair disc.  Insert a blank CD-R and it'll make it in about 4 min.  Be sure to use a system with either 32 or 64 bit Windows 7 that's the same as your computer.  Then you can remove the CD and boot from it on your computer to do the repair and/or boot to the Command Prompt.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

In the log you posted, here's the bottom line:

"2014-07-10 14:27:14, Info                  CSI    00000457 [SR] Verify and Repair Transaction completed. All files and registry keys listed in this transaction  have been successfully repaired"

So I'd say the problem you reported originally with SFC has somehow been resolved.   :)  Do you still have the blank screen issue?

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

Do you still have the blank screen issue?  Yes.

"Turn windows features off or on" is still blank. Confirmed

OK, so now that we've resolved SFC problems, we need to try other things.  Let's take a look at that Windows error log with MiniToolBox which you can download from here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/ .  Check the boxes for

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors and List Installed Programs.  Copy and paste the resulting log in your next post.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

The system error log shows problems with Microsoft.VC80.MFC

Microsoft.VC80.ATL, PowerDVD - powerdvd11\Movie\powerdvd cox\PowerDVDCox11.exe
 powerdvd11\Movie\powerdvd cinema\PowerDVDCinema11.exe
and code integrity errors with Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\drivers\WUDFPf.sys.

Let's try uninstalling and reinstalling that Power DVD program and making sure the version you have is compatible with Windows 7.  Then for the problem with WUDFPf.sys let's run SFC.  Click Start and type CMD in the search box.  Then right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator.  From the Command Prompt type sfc /scannow.  That will scan for corrupt system files and attempt to repair them.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

How many phases is sfc /scannow is there supposed to be?

The reason is the first time I ran it before I made my thread, it only did a "verification" phase. I thought as I remember from using XP there should be three phases....

Verification was the only phase mine went through, although mine took 15 min. to run on my laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.  It just finished.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

The program that displays this info is in C:\Windows\Syswow\appwiz.cpl.  Try clicking Start and typing in appwiz.cpl in the search box, then clicking on appwiz.cpl in the programs list.  See if that does anything different.  It works fine on my laptop buy YMMV.

appwiz.cpl gives me main control panel showing add/remove programs to uninstall. It shows the turn windows off or on in upper left hand corner and when clicking on it shows please wait then shows up blank with no default windows programs listed. BTW: Here attached is sfc /scannow cbs.log-2 after installing powerdvd 11. I accidently ran the "no errors" completion of sfc /scannow on main pc not the host pc by mistake.
