So I removed the Department of Justice ransomware from this Acer Aspire One netbook using hitmanpro kickstart.

Ran Malwarebytes after - found nothing

Ran Superantispyware after - found nothing

Ran RKill - found nothing

I cannot, for the life of me, remove Ask.com Toolbar.

I get the following message:

"A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\Windows\Installer\AskToolbarInstaller-12.15.1_ORJ-VJC.msi"

I've tried uninstalling with CCleaner - same message.

I've tried deleting entry - Cannot delete MSI installer

I've even tried downloading Ask.com toolbar, reinstalling, and uninstalling again - same message.

I went into IE, manage addons and removed. - still won't uninstall

I'm stumped. Is this netbook still infected? Was something damaged when I removed the ransomware? Can our heroes save the day?

Help me obi-wan kenobi - you're my only hope.

(its early, and I'm frustrated and pre-caffinated)

Three things to try.... (1) boot into safe mode and then attempt to locate and delete file.

  • (2) download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
    Click on Delete.
    Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

  • (3) download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

I have had to clean rootkit files out of windows using linux to delete files on some occasions. Linux bootable's are my best friend!

Ask may be listed in your add/ remove program list. Check to see.

See if Revo uninstaller can find it. Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

If that doesn't work then use AutoRuns for Windows and try to find Ask and disable. May be something in startup.

That's the problem. It's in the Add/Remove list, but you cannot actually uninstall it.

I tried uninstalling it with Revo and received the same error message.

When using revo did you follow through with deleting the registry keys that were associated with the software? After revouninstaller removes all of the related files, generally when you go back to uninstall a program from windows uninstall, it will just ask if you want to remove the program from the list as it has already been removed.

Holy Frijoles! Even though Revo gave me the same error message, it seems to have removed Ask.

It's gone.

I've checked everywhere and that annoying piece of software is vanquished!

Ahh you guys made my day ~♥
