Hi!  I have IE as my default internet browser so that Windows updates come in automatically.  I use Firefox most frequently though.  My browser keeps getting redirected to "about:blank".  Is this a hijack or just malware?  I don't want it!  I have Norton 360 and a tech removed it but it came right back.  Can you advise me on how to get rid of it and how to be protected from it?  I'd really appreciate it.  Happy Fourth of July Bleeping volunteers!!!!  :hello:

First, IE doesn't need to be the default browser to get your automatic updates.  As For Firefox:

Second, go to the page you want to be your default, and:

1.  Click Tools

2.  Click Options

3.  Click General tab

4.  Click Use current page.

For the "new tab"

1.  In the addressbar, enter (no quotes): "about:config"

2.  Acknowledge warning.

3.  In Search enter (no quotes): "browser.newtab.url"

4.  Double click on: browser.newtab.url

5.  Enter the URL, most likely same as previous.

6.  Click OK

Best of luck

Internet Explorer's Internet Options has several choices for setting your Home Page under the General Tab: "Use current", "Use default", "Use blank". The trusted blank page setting in Internet Explorer is also called about:blank. About is an Internal URI scheme. The "Use blank" page setting is exactly what it means...start Internet Explorer with a blank page. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons to include opening the browser faster since there are no images, ads, etc that slow the loading of a page. Various other web browsers use about:blank to display certain built-in functions.Years ago there was an infection...CoolWebSearch (CWS) with the same name which hijacked browsers. For more information, see The CoolWebSearch Chronicles by Metallica. Folks who inadvertently used IE's about:blank setting erroneously believed they were infected.

This still occurs even today, especially when searching for information on the net in regards to about:blank...it is not unusual to find numerous hits from untrustworthy and scam sites which mis-classify detections or provide misleading information.

I agree with scotty_ncc1701...I use FF as my default browser.
