Hi all,

I'm running Windows from my primary SSD drive, and also have all my programs running from there. It's down to 8GB free of 111GB but I have more things to install. Can I install and run them to my 2nd Hard Drive (a USB external) which I currently use only for storage? If not, what's the solution? Do I just need to buy a new, bigger capacity SSD to replace the current one? I hope not because that would be a pain in the a...

Thanks.

I'm not one of the experts here but I've done that and haven't had any significant issues.  I know there have to be some disadvantages doing that such as slower speed than the main SSD.  I would suggest putting portable programs and ones that aren't too complex in terms of needing to infiltrate separate parts of the operating system.  When you have a new program to install be sure to select "advanced" in the early stage of the installation then you may browse to the second hard drive. Be sure to keep all of the x86 or x64 files in the same folders otherwise it can get pretty scattered.

You can also easily re locate your default video, download, document and photo folders to an ouside (of the SSD) drive.  Go to the properties of the folder and select location at the top. Browse to the other area that you want it to be and click apply.  It will then strongly suggest to move all of the files at one time.  Thats what I do. It takes more time and work but it is possible to keep almost all files except the operating system itself off of the smaller SSD.  I'm sure there are people that can give you better details, but from a usuers standpoint. It works.  Good day, Rob :thumbup2:

Most people who uses SSD as boot drive also has an HDD installed internally as data drive like I do. I suggest you do the same. I haven't tried installing programs in an external USB hard drive but it's possible it will work but the main issue will be load up times and other speed related matters.

As previously suggested...move all data files (movies, games, music, etc.) from the SSD.  Having them on the SSD serves no purpose at all.

I install my programs and Windows on my SSD drives (dual-boot) and I have plenty of room for each O/S on my SSDs.

You need to address that issue first...since you are also well-below the 15% of free space on the Windows partition...which is generally recognized as necessary for Windows to function properly.  8GB of free space is not enough.

I have no documents or music or games on my SSD. Just all my apps.

Just looking at the list of installed programs...it seems unlikely to me that those would take up so much drive space.

I suggest that you use a tool like WinDirStat to see what is taking up your drive space.  I don't use System Restore but it's one of the things that can result in tons of space being needlessly used, IMO.  In any case, a look will give you better focus on just what the problem is.

I've searched for files larger than 150MB and nothing there looks fishy, although admittedly I don't know what a lot of the files are exactly.

You don't need to know what...you need to know where they are stored.

The storage locations should give you some idea of purpose or non-purpose on your system.

Post the 10 largest clusters of files per WinDirStat, please.

Not useful :)...I'd like to see the breakdown of what's on the SSD, please.

Not sure what you mean - that's the SSD drive.

Double-click that first group to see the the detail that's taking up 1/3 of your SSD space, please.

When I looked at my detail for Files...there are only 2 components...pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys.  Hiberfil sys can be eliminated and the size of your pagefile (if left unchanged) in Win 7 is based on the amount of RAM you have (which is crazy).  The more RAM you have installed, the larger your default pagefile....this is NOT the way that it should work.

I suggest disabling hibernation and reducing your pagefile to a smaller, more reasonable size.

Then you will have all the room for programs that you need.

Louis

Ahhh. OK, so I have a pagefil of 15.8GB and a hiberfil of 11.8. I'll disable hibernation. What would you recommend as a pagefile size for me (I have 16GB RAM)

Thanks so much for your help.

EDIT: Did a bit of research and decreased the pagefile.sys accordingly.

Thanks again for your help Louis.
