I got a compaq lte 5280 and it came with a cd drive not working. After putting the drive in a dish washer and a new hard drive because a nasty power outage caused corruption it always gives drive not ready error. I have tried removing it from hardware list and rebooting multiple times but nothing that I can seems to work. All i want to do is get some vintage games and play them. I cant install any drivers without the drive so no wireless cards or just about anything else. I got a usb to ide cable coming so I will try to install drivers through my computer that way and if not then just put all the files onto a cf card and make the system run of a ssd. Please help with any ideas.

A IDE cdrom is cheap these days. Local shops probably have piles of these sitting around and would probably give you one. Check local used shops, check craigslist.com, ebay.com
