I am using a Dell Inspiron 620s and just started having this problem. Every so often when I attempt to type in a password, or anything in the windows search window, the block starts self populating with 0000000's. I am using a USB keyboard and have tried changing the USB port. I have even tried a new keyboard thinking it was a sticking key. I have run virus and malware removal software which found no problems, and I have even connected to Dell online and ran diagnostics which all pass. When this issue starts I can open Microsoft Word and the same o's just run continuously. Then only thing I can do to stop it is shut down the computer. When I reboot, it will do fine for a while and then the same problem starts again. Any ideas on what I can try next?

In order to help diagnosing the problem, please download and run Speccy.  After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.

Then download minitoolbox and run it with the following boxes checked:

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors

List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions, and Memory size

List Minidump files

Copy the resulting log and paste into a reply here.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

Double click on the download and choose to run the program.

A screen similar to the one below will open, click any key to run the program.

securitycheck_zpscfb86945.png

When the scan is finished there will be a log, copy and then paste your log in your next post.

You have a number of error related to McAfee.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I see a number of errors in MCSCAN32 and McLogEvent, which I assume are part of McAfee's security software.  I imagine that's why DC3 wants you to run  Security Check by Screen317.  According to Speccy your antivirus software is DISABLED.  I also see you're running Office XP which is unsupported by MS now.  I doubt if that's the cause for your problem, but you should be aware of it.

Well I am totally embarrassed. My issue was in fact caused by hardware. See, my wife had used a wireless keyboard and mouse a while back and decided she didn't want to use it anymore so she connected a USB keyboard and mouse. However, she left the wireless adapter plugged in the machine as well. I was in the process of dis-connecting all connects to see if it would make a difference and I realized what we had done. I have used the system with no problem the rest of this afternoon. However, I did try to download "Security Check" as recommended by dc3 and it wouldn't complete the download. In addition wpgwpg, I am aware of the Office XP software issue, but it has served me well so far. I really appreciate the help the two of you offered as I worked through this issue. Thank you.

I'm glad you got the problem resolved.  No need to be embarrassed; I tell my students that if a computer hasn't made you feel stupid lately, you just haven't spent enough time around computers!   :cherry:  We just have to remember that while a computer can do billions of things in a second, it's dumber than a chicken.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.
