I seem to be constantly frustrated nowadays by a computer that truly is best described as being of the bleeping variety. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium, and after all the problems experienced with Vista, I had thought things would improve. Silly me.

For reasons beyond me, it won't, or can't, do what I'd expect it to. I've run chkdisc (no errors found) and SFC (errors found, all corrected) and various malware / virus scans (no infections, no threats.) Yet simple ordinary routine tasks continue to be impossible, as per this list:

1 System Restore. I can set new restore points to my heart's content but will System restore ever find them? Nope. Never. I've tried repeatedly to go back to an earlier restore point but on each occasion am greeted with the message: "System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %SystemRoot%\registration. destination: ComPlus Staging."

2 Windows Repair Disc: Another supposedly simple Windows 7 task. But not for me. Every time I try to create it, the message is: Microsoft Windows Repair Disc has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

3 System Maintenance. An unexpected error occurred while troubleshooting. The troubleshooting wizard can't continue. Package ID: DeviceCenterDiagnostic. Path: C:\Windows\diagnostics\scheduled\Maintenance. Error code: 0x80070002. Source: Engine.

4. Devices and Printers. An unexpected error occurred while troubleshooting. The troubleshooting wizard can't continue. Package ID: MaintenanceDiagnostic. Path: Unknown. Error code: 0x80070002. Source: Engine.

5. Performance.  An unexpected error occurred while troubleshooting. The troubleshooting wizard can't continue. Package ID: PerformanceDiagnostics. Path: C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\Performance. Error code: 0x80070002. Source: Engine.

6. Windows Network Diagnostics. An unexpected error occurred while troubleshooting. The troubleshooting wizard can't continue. Package ID: NetworkDiagnostics. Path: C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\networking. Error code: 0x80070002. Source: Engine.

7. I went to Microsoft to find out what the heck an 0x80070002 error might be. It told me to run microsoft Fixit. because that would. . . Fix it. I downloaded and ran Fixit only it stopped before it had even started. The message? Microsoft Windows Repair Disc has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Reason for shoving that lot together here is to pose the question: is there a common factor in the cause of all this? I can't get the computer to restore anything, to diagnose anything, to even run Fix It.

Advice appreciated (though please note: I really am an ignoramus when it comes to IT. Just an ordinary individual, not an expert or anything remotely approaching that.)

A search on the Microsoft web site for error code 0x80070002 yields an answer from several MVPs that this is caused by duplicate accounts on the computer.  Details and solution here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/96339b4c-8f8e-4f43-9599-2fe306c4a28d/error-code-0x80070002-while-attempting-back-up?forum=w7itprogeneral

Before attempting this proposed solution I strongly recommend that you back up your system to an external hard drive.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

BIG thank you to hamluis and wpgwpg:

I thought my post would cause eyes to glaze over and so would languish without much response (o ye of little faith.) I seem to have chosen a bad day (huh!) for my Internet connectivity as it's been hell, trying to get it to work. Now I see that BT has had some sort of nationwide problem. Oh, great. But at least it hasn't been down to any fault at this end. Even my Yahoo mail has gabbled on about disruption caused by the cutting of an undersea cable, though what that has to do with anything escapes me.

Anyway. I can't do anything tonight but will start again tomorrow morning. The only thing I've attempted to do was download the MiniToolbox mentioned by hamluis only for it to instantly vanish thanks to my Panda Cloud anti-virus suddenly cutting in and saying it's harmful and has been "neutralised". Another example, then, of bleep bleep bleeping frustration: I guess the best thing to do is just stop Panada AV while I download from bleepingcomputer because I don't for a moment believe there's anything harmful here???

Sorry not to be able to go any further tonight, but, again, sincere thanks to you both for your prompt response ((and your patience.)

And here's the Speccy snapshot (or, well, I hope I've managed this all right):

By way of clarification -- if it helps -- I bought this computer as a pre-owned (10 months old) from a friend of my nephew's. It worked perfectly from the start. The only minor -- very  minor -- complaint I had was that the "user" wasn't, er, me, but rather, the name of the previous owner. On a visit to his hopeless Aunt (i.e., me) my nephew said it was an easy job to change the user name from that of the previous owner to the name I've always had for my computers ever since my x386 in 1992. That's the name that shows in the above log: Users: PUSSYCAT. Though why it isn't "user" (singular) I don't know . . .

I see a number of things indicating corrupt files and I see a downlevel version of Java (update 55).  There've been numerous security exposures reported with Java in the past, so I'd remove it if you don't need it.  If you do need it, at least you can update it to update 60, the current version.  For the corrupt files you should run SFC.  Click Start and type CMD in the search box, then right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator.  Then from the command prompt type sfc /scannow.

I'm not sure I understood your comment about user IDs, but if you want to create a new ID, you can do that via the User Accounts applet of the Control Panel.  Easy to do, as your nephew says.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

The repair which wpgwpg has suggested involves a registry edit.  You need to follow the instructions exactly, because if you make an error it can result in your computer becoming a doorstop.

If you are going to proceed with the registry edit I would suggest backing it up first.

How to backup Your Registry with ERUNT

  • Please download Erunt.
  •
  • For version with the Installer:  Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer.
  •
  • For the zipped version you will need a program like 7-Zip to unzip the file.
  •
  • Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
  •
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERUNT.exe

Click on Start, then type services in the Search box.

When services appear in the results list right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

When Services opens scroll down to System Event Notification Service, right click on it and choose Properties

In Properties set Startup type to Manual.

In the Service status click on Run, then click on Apply, then OK.

DC3, backing up the registry is a good idea.  A better idea is to back the whole system up to an external hard drive.  That way, if the system does become a doorstop, you can restore and be back up and running in 30 min.  :bananas:

Actually, if you backup the registry then you can reset it and avoid the whole problem. :grinner:

I've never had this particular error, so I assume you're right about resetting the registry.  I'll just add that everybody should have their system backed up to an external hard drive in any case.  I'm sure you know how Murphy loves computers.  :smash:  We see a lot of sad tales of woe in this forum that would be much less sad if folks would just keep backups.  :thumbsup2:

First off, apologies to everyone for being so inept as to fail to update the notifications facility in my account settings. I've had to be away all day today but did check my email to see if there was any notificatiion of a new addition being added to this thread by some kind poster. There were none, so I assumed that (perhaps) the timezone phenomenon was working against me -- rather than my own crassness. I have now updated the settings, and feel not a little mortified about everything, too.

Re the advice given after I posted the earlier details. To wpgwpg, sincere thanks: yes, I'm sloowly beginning to see the lilght. Couple of points: I'm not sure if I need Java or not. or whether I use it or not. I'm constantly befuddled by the difference, if there is one, between Javascript and Java. Anyway. My browser is Firefox and I have NoScript which is fine until a web page crops up which requires repeated clicking of different NoScript options, almost to the point that I'm tempted to turn NoScript off altogether. As to sfc: that's the weird thing -- I've run sfc twice now and yes, it has found errors, and then, eventually, it has reported that it has repaired the errors. But after that. . . all the problems that existed before the corrupted file check are still there after the reported corrupted file repair. So, um, I'm stumped?????

To Arachibutyrophobia (love the name, even if I'd never manage to spell it without copy and paste): I've just downloaded Erunt and Ngrept or something (!) and then read through the 'Read Me'. I don't entirely follow everything but it's informative and well written and even though I'm not the brightest bulb on a Christmas Tree I do remember someone once telling me to RTFM, an acronym which originally defeated me but which I subsequently learned has a relevant bleeping meaning. Anyway. I've faithfully read the text from top to bottom and I've then run ERUNT as a backup and it reports that all is saved to the default Windows location.

Next: I've typed in 'services' (minus the quotes) and three options came up: Component Services, or services, or services.exe. The first two don't allow any right-click menu option that includes 'run as administrator'; the last one does. Right-clicking on servides.exe and selecting 'run as administrator' then opens. . . nothing, sadly.  I've tried this several times now but 'run as administrator' isn't running anything. Sadly, then, I can't actually access the System Event Notification Service. Incidentally, I've tried to open services.exe both as an administrator and with a simple left click on 'Open' but nothing at all happens. . .

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding anything here. Again, my apologies to you both for being a somewhat fitful attendee here -- I have another hectic evening ahead of me so may not be able to return until tomorrow. :(

Despite the similar name, Java and Javascript are different products. Forget about Javascript because you have no control over when it is used on a website. Once upon a time, Java was commonly used on websites. Today it is mainly used in games. It's up to you. If you don't think you need Java, get rid of it because it is a security risk.

I see no SR issues reflected in the MTB or Speccy data.  What is the date of these cited errors?  I don't know much about SR, but if I used it and was nof functioning properly...I would turn it off, then turn it on again to begin with an ostensiblly clean slate.

In part of your first post, you say that you ran sfc /scannow and found no problems...later you state that problems were found and overcome.  I suggest that you run it again.

The majority of issues documented by your input relate to Search and Content Index.  The two are related, with may Event Viewer errors caused by a damaged/missing content index.

    FWIW:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/e286be80-ed7e-4026-b6b7-d512ff642db5/windows-search-esent-errors-after-every-reboot .

I also suggest either removing or uninstalling/reinstalling Hit Man Pro to overcome those errors.

There is no indication of overheating/hardware problems that I see.

You can also open Services from the Control Panel.

There are two views of the Control Panel.  Control Panel, and All Control Panel Items.

The image below is of the Control Panel view.  Notice the Control Panel outlined in red, there should be an arrow just to the right of it which when clicked on will open a drop menu with the choice for the All Control Panel Items.

You will see that System Security is outlined in red, click on this and another window will open with the Administrative Tools, click on that.  Another window will open with an list of options, scroll down to Services and click on it.  This will open Services.

If you click on the arrow just to the right of Contol Panel an image like the one below will open.  This is the All Control Panel Items view.
