When purchasing a domain, say i wanted to have that website hosted at a company, in most cases they tell you to point your nameservers to them, for example ns1.webhost.com and ns2.webhost.com

I have also known some people just change their A records to point to the new server...

What is the difference of doing each? Are there any advatnages/disadvantages to each method?

thanks!

if you are going to use a different name server, any other DNS zone records, like MX records, will have to be added to the new name server.

Name servers are basically the final authority on anything regarding your domain. So if you have other services that are hosted on a particular name server, it's better to use an A or CNAME record to redirect DNS requests.
