I have just discovered that my ACER desktop has a microphone in it that is not acknowledged in the specs.  I can make recordings without a microphone plugged into the jack.  Judging by the background noise I figure it is on the Realtec HD embedded HD sound-card.  Why would they do this?

Have you plugged in a webcam or a headset that is usb? I have never heard of a desktop coming with a mic built into the mainboard and research doesn't show anything related to your model about a built in mic. Nearly all modern webcams have mic's built in.

If you right click on your volume icon and click recording devices what is listed there? It would need to be on and set as the default device. You can double click on the device then click properties and check the "listen" box to possibly help locate the mic.

OK I figured it out...

I had a headset plugged in in the back using 3.5 mm jacks  that I was not using much anymore.

Thanks for the response.
