Ach, I hope this is the right place to put this.

Basically: A few days ago, my computer was working... as good as I can ever expect it to. The next day, everything blew up. I've been trying every solution I've come across for the past two days now. I don't know if this is being caused by a single source, or if I'm just being subjected to a perfect storm of unrelated errors. I've tried fixing them individually, I've tried looking for overall solutions (Googling "only system sound" or what have you), but nothing doing. The short of it is that almost everything dealing with audio refuses to play it, despite system sounds working fine, along with some other programs. Additionally, I'm also getting related programs/plugins freezing, which makes me think this isn't an issue with my soundcard (not that I particularly know how those even work, so).

Here's a detailed rundown of everything that's gone wrong... so far.

Audacity
Able to record sound. On attempted playback: "Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."

Windows Media Player
Red X appears next to track: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." Audio plays in system preview window.
Attempt to play CD: Not Responding, eventually shows generic "had trouble playing your file" error.

VLC
No sound.

Internet Things

Youtube
Firefox: Lag, followed by "Warning: Unresponsive plugin, Shockwave Flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. [...]" Continuting results in same message, stopping results in crashed plugin screen.
Chrome: Video plays after delay, no sound.

Vimeo
Both: Video plays, no sound.

Pandora
Firefox: Flash plugin crash 5
Chrome: "Plays", no sound.

Direct MP3 File

Video can't be played because the file is corrupt.

Essentially everything that involves sound.

What hasn't worked:
-Reinstalling Flash (v14)
-"Play sound in browser" box is checked.

What IS Working

Vegas Pro: Can record and playback sound.
Configuring sound settings: Speakers apparently work fine.
All system sounds work.

General Unhelpful Things:
-Yes, I've tried turning it off and turning it back on again.
-Checking for registry error (.../Drivers32, wavemapper string-- not missing, permissions good).
-Running Audio Playback Troubleshoot (some hardware changes may not have been detected).
-Found that I was missing the Marvell 91XX driver-- it was showing up under "unspecified" in my device manager. Fixed that (?), still nothing.

As for my computer details... Windows 7 and I guess Marvell 91XX is my soundcard. I don't know.

For reference, I've taken screenshots of most of the errors I've been getting, along with some information about my system that may or may not be relevent: http://imgur.com/a/dxwIB

(To top it all off, I can't even get Steam to open in order to test game audio, but that's probably a separate issue.)

Hi Sedgewicke,

Sorry to hear of your woes, let's see what we can do.

The Marvell driver is a HDD driver for RAID configurations generally, I don't think it has anything to do with your current issues.

So, please run Minitoolbox and check

  • last 10 errors
  • list devices (only problems)

Please copy and paste the log into your next response.

Cheers

TsVk!

Please use System Restore to restore to before the issue occurred.

I tried that, but it only gave me the option of restoring to a point several hours after it occured, even when I checked "show more restore points".

EDIT: Yeah, It's only giving me one point-- late on the 21st. It started, I think, on the 20th or maybe even early 21st.

When did you do your last Windows update?

edit: please run "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt.

I actually have no idea-- is there any way I can find out? I'm usually pretty lazy when it comes to updates, since they often require a restart and I'm too busy doing "important things".

And you're gonna have to help me out here-- elevated command prompt?

To see Windows updates

Start Orb > Control Panel > View by: Small Icons > Windows Update (last icon at the bottom)

It will show you when your last updates were.

For elevated command prompt,

Start Orb > Search "command" > right click command prompt > Run as Administrator.

then type "sfc /scannow" in there and hit enter....

Apparently I've never updated anything. In my defence, it is a somewhat new computer. Somewhat. Okay, look, I'm just really irresponsible. But apparently an update was attempted on the 21st, but everything is listed as having failed (Error 80246008).

This is what I got:

M4tdgJ0.png

I found the CBS.log, but I can't open it. I hope this is normal.

Please enter this from the elevated command prompt, and return the output.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

if it is too big copy to a text file and attach.

Not being able to figure out this forum's new-fangled attachment system (which I'm sure is probably stupidly obvious and simple), here's a wall of text:

EDIT: Apparently the update installer was also really, really broken. An error ending in 6008 or something. I ended up having to follow an absurdly long trail because the thing that would fix the updater was itself broken (Services not being a recognized file), then the next step (BITS not listed in Services), then the NEXT next step (unable to start BITS), but eventually I got it working, even though at a few points along the way I forgot what it was I trying to fix in the first place. Now I don't know what to do with all these updates. I'd say they couldn't break things any more than they already are, but I think we all know that's a lie.

It's pretty much as I feared.

The next course of action is to perform a repair installation of Windows.

This is generally non-destructive, but make sure you have any essential data backed up.

edit: yeah I thought about the BITS route too, but there's too much other stuff gone south and we don't know what caused it...

Oh boy.

Well, let's start. First off: How do I know whether or not I have SP1 installed? I tried checking "Properties" under "Computer" but it just doesn't respond. Should I just go aread and try to install it anyway, or will that just make the repair more complicated?

I should also note that I have no idea where my Windows disc is.

Being fairly new you can pretty much guarantee it has SP1.

you can download a Win7 ISO image from here and create a new install disk with a DVD (though probably not with the problem pc)

I wouldn't try installing Windows updates at this stage, that will likely brick your OS.

Just do the repair install...

Okay, so I got the ISO burned as an image onto a DVD, and managed to get to the point where it lists any compatibility issues. Turns out, I'd downloaded the wrong version: I'm x64, not x86 (as I had thought, except I had been told that if I wasn't sure, to just go by which you have more programs in).

So I erased the disc, download the x64 version, started it up, and... I got an error 0xE0000100, I believe between the license terms box and the upgrade box (which I had gotten to with the x86 version). What shenanigans are at play now?
