Hello,

Last weekend I noticed my computer was making connections making connections to countires like Ukraine and Denmark. I am a network engineer and thought this looked very suspicous. I ran scans using rescue tools like Kaspersky Rescue CD and Vipre Rescue but did not find anything wrong. My companies computer administrator asked me run HijackThis which I did on 6/17. Unfortunatley I hadn't found this site yet so I was trying to fix the issue myself. I let HijackThis Fix everything and then booted into safemode with networking. I downloaded and installed MalwareBytes and ran a scan which reported a Trojan called Backdoor.Bot.gen. Here are the logs from that scan.

Like I said I tried to fix the issue myself for the last few days and I'm not sure if the computer is clean. I though I had fixed the issue but when I went to re-install Vipre Internet Security 2014 I encountered some strang behaviour. A pop-up came up in the middle of the 2014 install. I closed these windows but after installing 2014 I ended up with the Sunbelt Vipre 2010. I opened a case with Vipre and they were able to uninstall the old version and install the 2014 version but I still thought this was suspicous.I created another support case to have an expert investigate my computer. The tech had me reboot into safemode with networking and remote in. He uploaded TDSKiller to my desktop and ran a scan that looked clean. He then uploaded autoruns and spent about 2 minutes looking at the output and decided my computer was clean.

I thought I was okay until this weekend when I opened up autoruns and noticed that my HP update software was showing up red because it was not verified. Here is a copy/paste from autoruns.

HP Support Assistant Service    HP Support Assistant Service    (Not verified) Hewlett-Packard Company    c:\program files (x86)\hewlett-packard\hp support framework\hpsa_service.exe    9/27/2012 4:55 AM

Yesterday there was nothing showing red in Process Explorer but today there is one process reporting an issue. It is an HP executable named hpqWmiEx.exe that gets a 1/54 from VirusTotal. Antiy-AVL is reporting a Trojan with a very new signature.

Antiy-AVL     Trojan/Win32.SGeneric     20140619

I downloaded CatchMe to my desktop and renamed the file ;akjldf;jl;lj.exe and ran it with Administrative right. It reported the following.

detected NTDLL code modification:
ZwEnumerateKey 0 != 47, ZwQueryKey 0 != 19, ZwOpenKey 0 != 15, ZwClose 0 != 12, ZwEnumerateValueKey 0 != 16, ZwQueryValueKey 0 != 20, ZwOpenFile 0 != 48, ZwQueryDirectoryFile 0 != 50, ZwQuerySystemInformation 0 != 51Initialization error

This all seems pretty suspicous to me and I need some profesional help. Below is the DDS log and the attach.log file is attached. Thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/538660 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I am still seeing strange behavior on my PC such as locked and hidden files, BSODs when trying to restart my computer and other very suspicous activity like port 5901 showing up on a netstat for instance. Since I last posted I downloaded the Windows 7 Pro x64 install disk available from DigitalRiver, burned it to DVD and verified that I can load the Windows Recovery Console. While booted to the recovery console disk, I ran a memory check and did an SFC scan (sfc /scannow /bootdir=e:\ /windir=e:\windows) and both came back clean.

All most all of my important files were already backed up to my MAC. However, I do have a few VMware images that I don't want to lose if at all possible. I didn't have those backed up because the take too much space. I haven't tried to copy them in case they contain malware. If there is a secure way to get these files copied off the system and scanned I would appreciate some advice.

Here is the output from the DDS scan.

Hello,

I'm not sure if I missed something in my post or if the volunteers are just super busy. Please let me know if I forgot to post any information. There is definitely an infection as I cannot install MalwareBytes, boot into safe mode and my Comodo firewall will not start. If the volunteers are busy I will stand by.

Thanks!
