Hi.....just recently, I have been unable to access some hidden files on an external hard drive I use with my Windows 8 Asus laptop.

All the hidden files have disappeared but I know from the size of the folder that they are still there - I just can't view them. When I try clicking "Show Hidden Items" in the ribbon on top of the explorer window it will not stay checked.

This is the same for when I go through control panel -> Appearance & Personalization -> Show hidden filse and folders.......when I click it and "apply" and close the window the hidden files are not there and when I go back into control panel, the "show hidden files" box is unchecked again.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I don't know how it happened - maybe through an update but it only started happening about a week ago.

This sounds like malware.  I'd do a scan with Malwarebytes and my antivirus program.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

I agree with wpgwpg.  I had Windows 8.0, then 8.1, now 8.1U, and never had that issue.

Best of luck!
