I am recently having severe issues with Windows freezing (or hanging, not sure) when trying to open a set of programs. Specifically when I open any video game the laptop freezes and stops responding to any inputs. Sometimes it freezes partially, as in I am allowed to open new tabs on chrome, but I can't do anything in that new tab. The only way I seem to be able to restore the system is if I force shutdown the laptop. The issue also occurs when I try to uninstall programs from the list in the control panel.

As of now the problem occurs only in these circumstances. I am able to run internet browsers, microsoft office, skype, etc. with no problem. I recently did a system restore, which made the issue worse, though it was also present before that sometimes.

On another forum I was told to run a chkdsk scan and check for any 'bad sectors' on the drive. I don't really know what these are, but apparently they are a very bad sign. I ran the scan, and there does not seem to be any issue in the results from this one. The only place, where I found mention of bad sectors is this one:

118069247 KB total disk space.
50419736 KB in 115268 files.
75524 KB in 29590 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
279039 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
67294948 KB available on disk.

On the other hand I had also ran a chkdsk yesterday, but forgot about it. There is some data in bad sectors in this one, though I don't understand how, since the one after it shows no issue. Also something strange is that overall this second check has a much longer log file. Here is the last bit of it:

614399999 KB total disk space.
381626832 KB in 72579 files.
34012 KB in 13183 indexes.
360 KB in bad sectors.
331267 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
232407528 KB available on disk.

I have literally zero idea what any information in the logs means, so any advice would be helpful.

Think of your hard drive as a parking lot.  Each sector is like a single parking space.  Over time some of the sectors on hard drives can go bad.  Running chkdsk checks for these and attempts to replace the bad sectors with alternates that the manufacturers reserve on the drive for such purposes.  When you first ran chkdsk, it found some of these and fixed the problem.  Therefore the next time you ran chkdsk, it didn't find any more bad ones.  That's what you should expect on a hard drive that's not failing.  So the bottom line is that unless more bad sectors show up soon, you don't have to worry about the hard drive.  However it's ALWAYS a good idea to back up your system to an external hard drive because bad things can and do happen to computers occasionally.  Practice that ounce of prevention and avoid the painful pound of cure!

Are you still having the problem with freezing?

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.

Looks like reported data is from two different partitions.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Please...uninstall Uniblue\SpeedUpMyPC, it is an "registry cleaner/optimizer" and BC does not support the use of such.

Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254

Registry cleaner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner

Registry Cleaner FAQ, PC Support - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/registry-cleaner/a/registry-cleaner-faq.htm

After removing that...please run the chkdsk /r command on your Windows partition.

See if the freezes continue.

- I wouldn't recommend playing games on a notebook computer.

- The temperature of your harddisk CPU is high (68 C). Open Task Manager (CTRL-Shift-Esc) and select "Processes", "Show processes of all users" and click on "Processor" to sort the running processes on processor use. Which program(s)/process(es) use(s) the most CPU time (when you're playing a game) ? Perhaps there's one game that Always freezes your system.

- Speccy tells me that memory usage is quite high (62%). Especially Chrome uses LOTS of memory. Your computer freezing up when playing a game could mean that there's too little memory. Install PcWintech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes. Or install more memory.

- Your harddisk gives a "Warning" message. Run the program HDTUNE. If your harddrive has any weaks spots the program will detect them.

- Things have gotten worse when you did a System Restore. That suggests that you need to update all the drivers/programs you're using. System Restore is a wonderful tool if & when it works but when it doesn't work it's a nightmare. I would recommend to install Tweaking's Registry Backup.

Hard drive temperature is OK...I think you made a mistake reading the temperature :), the CPU temp appears to 68 Celsius (max for that CPU is 100 Celsius).

OP has 4GBs of RAM installed and an 8GB pagefile...I don't think he needs your designated "memory fix" tool at all.  Memory is supposed to be used and browsing is normally the activity using resources the most, IME.

The S.M.A.R.T. status is indicating a warning.  I would suggest running the SeaTools diagnostic tool to ascertain the hdd's condition.

Please download SeaTool for DOS.

When the SeaTools for DOS website opens click on I Accept, then click on the Download button in step #4.

This download is a ISO image which you will need to burn to a CD in order to create a bootable disc with which to run the diagnostic tests.

To burn this ISO file to a CD or DVD use the instructions below.

Notice:  This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.

1.  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.

2.  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.

3.  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image.

4.  In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.

burndiskimage1_zpsb502b181.png

5.  In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.

burndiskimage2_zps17a9d6ff.png

6.  After the image has completed being burned click on Close

Once the disc is created load it in the CD/DVD drive and restart the computer.

Please note:  You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.

Please run the short test and include the results in your next post in this topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I would also suggest purchasing a canned duster, (incorrectly referred to as canned air), and blow out the dust by blowing through the vents on the sides.

Looks as though some adware is on the system in Selection Links.

Plus uTorrent is installed, potentially an open gate for malware to enter the computer. This works by P2P (computer to computer) connection, one infected computer in the chain can cause all to be.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

- Speccy says Chrome is using slightly over 2 GB of all physical memory.

...and that still leaves more than 1.5GB for other tasks that may be engaged by RAM alone...and leaves the 8GB pagefile unused in reserve should even more resources be needed.

What's going on with this listed on the system?

Assassins Creed IV Black Flag (HKLM-x32\...\QXNzYXNzaW5zQ3JlZWRJVkJsYWNrRmxhZw==_is1) (Version: 1 - )

Every search that I come up with is not good, as in malware infection.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Assassins+Creed+IV+Black+Flag+%28HKLM-x32\...\QXNzYXNzaW5zQ3JlZWRJVkJsYWNrRmxhZw%3D%3D_is1%29+%28Version%3A+1+-+%29&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=rcs

Looks like an 'Am I Infected' issue.

Of course...the correlation between malware and the game probably lies in all those torrented illegal downloads.  What better way (and what better group) to target for malware...than those wanting illegal versions of games?
