Windows 7, HP Pavilion dv4, computer suddenly started running very slowly

I have an HP Pavilion dv4, 500gb memory, about 5 years old.  It was working fine up til about a week ago when everything started running very slowly, at least ten times slower than the day before.  Firefox kept randomly pausing every five seconds or so, programs take a long time to open, etc.  I reset the system to a save point from earlier in the week.  That took about 12 hours for the computer to complete, and it didn't help.   I thought maybe I picked up a virus, so I tried to run a scan.  Malwarebytes didn't find anything and Microsoft Security Essentials has, as of this morning, been running for about 56 hours and has scanned about 300,000 files.  I don't think that should take this long.   I am not computer savvy, so I looked around on the internet and some pages suggest that my hard drive needs replacing.  Is there anything else it could be?   I have no idea how to port my operating system and everything over onto a new hard drive and would like to avoid screwing up my computer even more.

Anyone?

 It sounds like a hard drive problem, but before replacing it, I'd want to do a few things.  First I'd back up any data I didn't want to lose while I still could.  Next I'd run chkdsk and let it check for and attempt repair of any bad sectors.  This will probably run another 2-3 hours - sorry 'bout that.  :wink: Finally I'd download disk diagnostics from Seagate or Western Digital and run them.  That will give you a lot of good info including the SMART data which predicts when the drive will fail.

500gb memory? Or 500gb hard drive?

 

I'm firstly virus/malware, secondly bad hard drive.

 

A few things I'd like to know:

 

How much free space do you have on the hard drive? Do you do a lot of downloading? Gaming? Music?

 

Do you have a lot of toolbar or browser helpers on your Firefox?

 

I'd run a scan with AdwCleaner (scan only), and check the log.

Sorry, 500 GB hard drive, of which about 50 gbs is free.  I don't game, but I do a fair bit of downloading, though none in the last few weeks.  I don't have any add-ons to Firefox.

 

I'm hoping that the Microsoft Security scan will be done by the time I get home tonight, then I can try these other programs.

After MSE I would like you to run these. It includes AdwCleaner as suggested. But I feel we need more info and scans.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
    Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.



    Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

    Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
  • -- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on each one and uncheck any items you want to keep (except you cannot uncheck Chrome and Firefox preferences lines).

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".

  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Ok, so I got home and the scan is still running. I'm hoping it finishes by the weekend, as I feel I've gone too far to not let it complete. I'm out of town most of next week, so I don't know if I'll be able to do all this before July, but I'll check back as soon as I do. Thanks.

After the scan was done, I ran system check and it seemed to work.  Computer has been working better, not great (leading me to post something new today).  But this particular topic is closed.
